Fuel consumption 1.2 TSI 86HP (Combi)

Featured Replies

I drove my Mrs' combi yesterday and was surprised at the fuel consumption (as reported on the dash). Running the same routes as I would in my 1.2 TSI 90HP (4 cyl) 2017 Combi, it was 10 MPG short driving it pretty much in the same way.

I used to drive the car a lot and I remember it being 'better' on MPG than it is now. On a run on a flat dual carriageway, doing about 56, it could usually get 55+ MPG but it seems worse now with only one occupant.

So, I can guess that either they changed the MPG calculation (although this doesn't account for the difference from now to then) or something is amiss ?

Anything I should look for / possible causes ?

?

Was that with it zeroed before starting off?

Has the good ladies car had a new air filter fitted or checked recently, tyre pressures checked, spark plugs replaced so running how it can run the most efficient that it can?

Was it Colder and Wetter yesterday where you were driving compared to last time you drove it.

Thanks, AG Falco

It was zeroed as it auto zeroes. The car is well maintained with recent tyres (pressures checked regularly), air filter and plugs (all about 10 months ago).

The weather was colder and wetter since the last time I remember the mpg from on a dual carriageway run but the weather was similar in the two consecutive days that I drove both.

@briscaF1

So it has new tyres. Are they like for like with what you used to drive it with on?

What the dash tells you is not really important compared to what you remember getting, it would need a brim to brim check to compare if you actually used to check that.

Your car is supposedly lighter than a Euro 5 one, and a Euro 6 Emission car with supposed lower C02 g/km.  This should mean lower fuel consumption.

?

What ps is your wifes 1.2 TSI?

It is not 90ps is it?

They're relatively like for like as it had Bridgestone Turanza on the rear and Hankook K435 on the front which were changed for the same fronts and some Maxxis rears.

I do brim to brim from time to time and find the dashboard optimistic (on both cars) but it's pretty consistent so I do treat it as a reasonable reference.

Hers is an 86PS from memory whereas mine is 90. They're both 4 pot TSI 1.2 but mine is 16V and hers is 8.

I think the point I'm making is that mine has always been better on mpg than hers but I'd say that hers was now noticeably worse (I noticed it after all!) and I just wondered if it might be an indication of something amiss.

My guess is a change of tyres.

Best look at the 10 month old air filter as sometimes the first indication of needing changed is the fuel economy dropping.

I think all those 1.2 R4 engines are 8V to increase torque off boost.
