Please help me decide between these 2 options

Featured Replies

Hey team, i'm buying a Kodiaq and ready to make a decision.

I'm not really a 'car guy' and am upgrading as my family has grown recently!

I've narrowed it down to 2 options, both meeting my core criteria (Automatic, Petrol, etc)

1. 18 Reg, 1.4 TSI (150ps) 4X4 Edition - 20,000 miles (full leather seats, blind spot detection, lane assist, pan sunroof & electric front seats with memory function)

2. 2020 (19 Reg) 1.5 TSI ACT SE L DSG - 8,000 miles (half leather seats, virtual cockpit, pan sunroof, heated front seats)  unfortunately manual seat adjustments

I'm leaning towards the SE L, is its in my preferred colour, Black.

Planning to use PCP on a 4 year term.

Is one car objectively better than the other?

I would choose the SEL as well but I may be a bit biased  :)

The only thing that would put me off is the sunroof, whilst nice to have they seem to be almost guaranteed to leak at some point.

Having suffered horrendous  leaks in my previous Yeti, I’d never spec another Skoda with panoramic roof.

i'm torn with the sunroof.   I've been on some long roadtrips recently in a friends car with a Pano sunroof and it made such a difference to the journey, loads of light and feels even more spacious!  but i've heard they can leak, especially the Yeti.  But i'm hoping with a new(ish) model, they have fixed any issues

The only other feature i'm excited by, is the electric memory seat function.   Me and my wife share the driving and we're forever changing the seats every time we get in the car!

You don't mention the price.

Assuming the same it's a no brainer.  The  SEL.

the Edition is about a grand cheaper.

Can i ask why its a no-brainer?   Again, i'm not a car person and this is the first SUV i've ever bought.

The "Extra's" on the Edition over the SEL are subjective at best.  Very unlikely to be worth the gap in mileage/age (unless you REALLY value  them).

I'd take the Edition. Memory seats is a must for a car with varying driver heights imo- and before you guys say it, yes, I am lazy. Plus it's a 4x4 model, even the 1.4/1.5's are easy to spin the wheels in the wet.

I like the panoramic roofs. Before my two Kodiaqs, I had a T31 Nissan X-Trail for 10 years with a panoramic sunroof that had no problems. It however was a different setup than the Kodiaq, where it was a single big pane of glass that actually went into the roof instead of sliding on top.

yes, I’m a fan of the memory seats for the same reason!

do you have a pano sunroof now?  Would you get one again?

I've had the pano roofs on my past two Kodiaqs, and I wouldn't hesitate to get it again if I were to buy another.

I have the edition version 4x4 - but with 2.0 Diesel - so thats would be my choice..

I love the pano roof on ours - 2.5 years old and no issues yet.

Our SEL has the optional electric drivers seat and manual passenger seat. The electric seat is massively more comfortable with much better lumbar support. I’m not fussed about electric adjust, but if you do a lot of driving, the more comfy seat is something that would matter to me if I bought again.

really good insight.  I've got a bad back and it gets quite uncomfortable on long journeys!

I've got some more details on price

2018 Edition - £24,400

2019 SE L - £26,795

Do you think that's a fair reflection on the differences between the 2 cars?

You’ll get a brand new SEL for much cheaper than that. Try carwow or drive the deal

with all the extras like Sunroof etc?

Not sure you’d have to spec it up. Quite easy to do

My 2019 (11 month old L&K 2.0 TDI 4x4 with extras) - List £41,000 - is valued at £28K as a PX against a new 70K car and similar on We buy any car

Search the Reg on We Buy Any Car - then you should not be paying more than 2K than they would buy if from you for...

£27851 on drive the deal with all that lot.

If it were my money and I could find an extra £1000, my no brainer option would be a 1.5tsi DSG Sportline. Sportline trim comes with memory seats and metallic paint as std therefore virtual cockpit, pano roof would be your only optional extras. ( Optional extras add near nothing to the value of a car so the less the better ).

In my humble opinion, the Sportline is way more desirable than a SE-L. Plus you should get that extra £1000 ( and perhaps more ) back when you come to sell it. At worst you'll break even.

Paying almost £27000 for a 2019 SE-L with 8000 miles or £29000 for a brand new 2021 ( probably '21 plate ) Sportline?  :tongueout:

Or if you look it with your Mr Sensible hat on,  the used SE-L you're looking at is somewhat overpriced at £26795.

Hey Scot,  thanks for the detailed response!

yes I’m starting to think the SE L is overpriced.

If I decided to order a new car, how long will I wait for delivery?  We were hoping to have something new by Xmas!

Also, do you think the sportsline is suited to families?   Eg; are the bucket seats practical?

My family car is an RS, so yes a Sportline would be perfectly fine for a family. The bucket seats are supremely comfortable however you can’t get them with seat ventilation yet AFAIK. Kids in the back can’t see quite as much but a non issue for anyone say 170cm+ tall.

People here will whine about the 20” rims being terrible and prone to kerbing and discomfort but I disagree. With the electric memory seats you get the mirror tilt function when parking so there’s literally no reason to kerb them. Ride on the 20” rims is firm but never offensive, suits me more than the 19” rims on my last Kodiaq.

There’s no excuse for kerbing wheels. I’ve never found the seat to be a factor when parking

OP - bucket seats?  Unless you're 30st, I would never describe the seats in a Sportsline as 'bucket'.  The marketing departments may want you to believe you can drive your car around Brands Hatch at 150mph but the reality is the Kodiaq is a large, wide family vehicle, not a small sports car. My Sportline has comfortable seats. I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to be experiencing.

I'm struggling to answer your other question. In what way would you expect the seat on a Sportline be any less practical than on an SE-L? They may look different but they both serve the exact same purpose. I'd only test driven a Kodiaq Edition for about 40mins, but as far as I remember, the seats in that car did the exact same job as the seats in my Sportline. From my own personal perspective, the Sportline seats feel more comfortable - if that's what you meant.

A MY20 1.5 TSI? No thanks, it was slap bang in the middle of VAG's 'Jerk Gate'. Software update or not, chances are it's been thrown back at the dealer.

Stick "VW 1.5 TSI engine problems" into Google.

By comparison the 1.4 TSI is a peach of an engine, properly developed and not strangled by emissions software and hardware.

Ah yes, I was wondering if either of these cars were affected by JerkGate

thanks for the info, think I’ve made up my mind :)

I have a MY20 1.5 TSI and it's been faultless.

I also had a 1.4 before that.

They are practically the same engine tbh, at least they drive like it.
