Removing the Polystyrene wheel well box.

Featured Replies

Just taken delivery of a 67 plate 1.4 TSI Estate Auto and loving it. I do a fair few miles but do not have the spare wheel kit supplied although I do have the inflator and gunk.

I have an unused 16" space saver that I removed from my Honda Civic before I traded in and think it will fit OK. My only issue is how to remove the polystyrene box that files the wheel well space. I've tried to lift it out, but it appears to be fitted under the rear trim of the estate boot. I don't want to break it if I can help it, so any thoughts.

I will have to get hold of the kit tray for the spare to move all the bits and pieces from the box to the new spare wheel.

Mine was quite loose in my 16 plate Combi. I got a steel full sized 16" wheel and tyre supplied for vehicle  delivery. The insert, pump and gunge were placed in the boot afaik. Kept the excellent pump.

@FrankNicklinare you sure that the Honda spacesaver will fit? It needs to be a 5x112 PCD.

Checked the wheel diameter which is OK, but not the PCD to be honest. So just checked online and I think the Civic is 5x114, damn.

have a look on ebay. You can usually find the full kit on there for a decent price

Yes, look on ebay or theskodashop.co.uk

The original is held in with a strap that tucks into a large plastic threaded bolt at the bottom of the spare tyre well.

Ok will take a closer look, but the box moves and I can’t see a strap or a plastic retainer.

Or if you can only find the wheel itself with the tools inside of it just wrap it in some bubble wrap or an old blanket and it will sit perfectly well in your tyre well when the foam insert has been removed. I did that a while ago with an old Audi spare wheel that I bought for my first Octavia 3 Estate car.

Its the big plastic nut at the bottom of the polystyrene box. Remove the spare wheel or the tyre inflation kit and you wilp see it there at the bottom. Unscrew it counter-clockwise. Box will come oout.
