What engine to choose?

Featured Replies

Hey all

I think my next car will be a Kamiq and im not sure what engine to get..

So i live in a big island in Greece called Crete and im  usally driving in the city and in the "mountain lands".

The distance to my work is about 45mins going through the mountains to the other side of the island + no. 3 kid is on the way and i am a casual driver.

I have an Opel Corsa 1.2 and a Suzuki Swift 1.3 92ps both unlead (i think ill sell 1 and keep 1 for the lady).

What engine do you all think will be enough for me. I dont whant to regret it after i get a non powerfull enough engine.

I was thinking of 1.0 TS1 DSG 110ps but i dont know if it would be enough.

Regards..

I have the SE L 1.0 115 and have to say its plenty.  Ok its not going to break any speed records but it pulls away well and goes up to speed smoothly and quietly.  Sitting at 70 on the motorway its refinded and, really you can't hear it.  It's just new so am not expecting the best economoy yet, and I haven't done any long drives yet.  I had this same engine in my last car (Seat Ibiza FR) and, on long drives I would regularily get 60 + Mpg for the journey.  While I am not expecting quite this much, I am hoping on the same journeys to get mid to high 50's.

The 1 litre has recently been changed from 115 to 110 hp

I too would suggest this with DSG

I have a 1.0tsi DSG in our Arona and it is Brilliant

I.0tsi works very well with DSG, but is not the easiest to live with if you want a manual gearbox (especially on mountain roads) as it it not happiest engine in wrong gear for speed.  Also be aware the manual might come with lower power version of 1.0tsi

I have 115 1.0 DSG Kamiq SE

It's brilliantly quiet and refined with more performance than you'd expect for such a small engine. I can't honestly think of a time when I felt it needed more power (I got it to replace my UP Gti - same engine). Yes the 1.5 has more torque and is barely less fuel efficient, but it costs a lot more.

The DSG gearbox does always want to be in the highest gear possible but kicks down quickly to push the Kamiq into the optimum torque band - but knock the gearbox into sport and the car really does drive down the road in a more spirited fashion (at the expense of fuel economy). IMO go for the higher spec 1.0 with DSG and save the money over the 1.5 or spend it on extra kit!

I regularly drive up to Manchester from Surrey, at a steady 65 mph you'll get mid to high 50s mpg at 70 it'll be around 51-52 mpg but that drops to mid to low 40s mpg at a steady 80mph.

I thing 1.0 dsg then it is..

i have the 1.5 dsg,,,however due to the constant lockdowns.  I have had it over 3 months and only done 859 miles.  Therefore i don't think my recommendation should count for a lot. However !     it's ****ing quite cool in SP mode  and delivers about 46mpg in urban .    DS as mentioned above always tries to go into highest gear...not very exciting...(but frugal) ...     BUT as  a certain fat tory times correspondent plays in a series called the world tour and has so far upset all known life forms  ( personally i love the show) ....anyway where was i .....   OH  YEA  .....      POWER    (albeit a little bit more)

Errrr....I was giving an indication of real world fuel consumption figures for driving long distances (200 miles) at motorway speeds, I was using cruise control so suspect that these figures would be better if driving without it.

Getting 72.3 mpg is impressive but comes from driving 11 miles at an average speed of 36 which is not really comparable.

Yup that's pretty much in keeping with my experience the best I've got out of it in normal driving conditions is just over 60 mpg.

Are you guys like driving at 10 MPH in 6th gear?
