Gearbox Oil Replacement?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a 2005 1.9Tdi (AWX) Superb.

I've noticed in the last few days that the garbox is getting harder to change gear sometimes and feels notchy where it hasnt before.

IS it worth getting the oil changed in the 5 speed manual box? (Its never been done as far as I know)

The car has done 165,000 miles.

Also, how is the clutch etc lubricated? Is this a different source of oil from the gearbox? (Clutch and Flywheel were changed about 4 years and 50,000 miles ago)

I nortced today on a steep incline that the clutch didnt seem to bite for a few seconds and there was a smell of burnt clutch material after pulling off from a stationary position.

Any advise greately appreciated,

Definitely worth doing if never done should help the shifts especially when cold, MAKE SURE you can open the filler plug before draining should be hex possibly a 17mm for both plugs, use the correct oil from Skoda/VW, they will be able to give you the capacity figure, make sure the car is level when you are draining/filling and add the oil slowly until it starts to come out the filler.

The clutch uses brake fluid and is unrelated, I would leave the clutch to a professional unless you have the skills they are not easy to bleed and generally dont need work unless there is air in the system or the clutch master is faulty. Clutch wear is dependent on driving style, but should last longer than that unless there is a parts failure.

As an aside, how would I know if the gearbox oil is getting low (if I had a slow leak) on it?

I have seen a small leak from somewhere but it is not coolant or engine oil?

Would the gear changes get noticibly notchier?

Is there a way to check the level on the gearbox?

Thanks Again,

I'm pretty sure the only way to check the fill level is to drain it and refill to the correct quantity.

I've always changed gearbox fluids 9n my cars and always noticed a massive improvement to the shifts.

To check the gearbox oil level you remove the filling plug and stick a finger in the hole.  If you can feel the oil, it's OK.

The correct level is at the bottom of the filling plug....ie, fill it until the oil overflows!

Thanks Again All

As above fill slowly till it starts to come back out the filler hole, make sure the car is level, as these cars go it is a cheap fix for piece of mind, the output shafts on the gearbox can leak at the seals, if you use the search function it will throw up some threads.
