Skoda Octavia MK3 Estate 1.6 or 2.0 Diesel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am considering buying a Skoda Octavia MK3 estate. I looking at around 2016 onwards for the model and have a budget of around 9k.

I am unsure which diesel engine to go for either the 1.6 or 2.0. I will be doing around 20k miles a year and mainly motorway miles. Any advice on which engine to go for would be appreciated.

Regards

Mark

Having had both I would go for a 2.0  , The  1.6 is good but the 2.0 is far far better ,amongst other things  the 2.0 is far more relaxed to drive and as a result  is actually better on fuel consumption  than the 1.6 .

One thing to consider is road tax as anything registered after April 2017 is liable to the  higher price .

The bigger engine is better for the motorway, but since they are both diesels, you’ll be happy with the smaller one as well.

Choose the car with lower millage and maintenance history. Especially if it has DSG and/or Haldex. Otherwise this 9k can turn into 12-13k for used transmission, etc..

Also save some money to change the oil, filters and something small after you buy it.

And last but not least, keep in mind that both engines have defective water pump which you may want to change with the fixed version considering the miles you’re going to do with a used car.

Good Luck!

Having driven both, I found the 2 to be quieter, more relaxed and actually more economical...

Either way you'll be happy I'm sure. I had an early mark 3 Estate with the 1.6 diesel engine and it was great on motorways but a bit flat in and around town which is in part because of the five speed rather gappy in the gear ratios gear box. If you're a keen driver you will want the six speed box in the bigger engine!

Had my 1.6 litre diesel for nearly 47000 miles and nearly 4 years and no issues with it with exception of failed fuel pressure sensor at 36K. Okay it can be a bit noisy at times but is great on fuel and spacious and solid. Easily best car Ive owned and despite always trawling the ads looking at cars, I cant see a reason to trade it in.

Well, if you look at West End Skoda (westendskoda.com), and look under used cars, they have our old Octavia 2.0tdi 4x4 (SO65 BNE) at £8995 - its done 79k miles and has a tow-bar plus most of the SuperSkoda catalogue chucked at it.  If you wanted to do an upgrade, get some steering wheel controls and you have a rocking car.

Had the 1.6TDi in a Fabia Monte Carlo hatch and a Fabia estate SE and it's ok but you might as well go for the 2.0TDi because in the real world it delivers better economy because you're not having to thrash it to get upto speed whereas the bigger engine is quieter and my 2013 Octavia managed 70mpg and my 2020 Superb 150PS diesel a remarkable 78mpg.

2.0 is effortless to trundle the miles in. Loads of torque available when required to overtake,  just keeps pulling. I have 2016 SEL dsg. I get 53mpg or more brim to brim without thinking about it. Boot swallow up loads of gear. I love it.

paulski , is the mpg you quote actual as in real life & accurate or mpg according to the trip computer.

I've calculated it manually so real life and accurate. I don't drive hard but don't granny about either.

My 1.6TDi, a few weeks ago.

Really appreciate the advice, went for then 2.0 TDI SE L with 60k on the clock. Got it off a private seller but took my mate with me who is a mechanic to check I was buying the right car. It had a full skoda service history and he had paid extra for an extended warranty so well worth it I thought.

Good choice buddy!

Agree, good choice, get some pics up and let's see it.

👍 Good choice. What year?  It's a cracking car in that spec. A few simple mods will make it just right.

Superskoda boot lights

Bonnet struts to make easy access for routine engine bay checks.

And check the coolant tank for discoloration. It should be bright pink. See this thread for further details. Its a "CAN" happen fault.
