Strange thumps from under the bonnet

Featured Replies

Yesterday, while parked with engine and ignition off but the Colombus providing a hands-free medium for the telephone conversation that I was having, I heard 3 'thumps' in around a second which immediately preceded the loss of the phone and the shutting off of the Colombus.  This has never happened before and occurred a few days after the Colombus, flickered (rapidly switched itself on and off?) whilst in motion and travelling down a local road that was not unduly bumpy.  In both instances the temperature was just below freezing.  It might be pertinent to add that the battery was replaced 5 weeks ago with another AGM by Halfords who determined 'no need to make any settings changes'.  Our local Stealer could not source and replace the battery without a delay of over a week - hence defaulting to Halfords.  Any thoughts from the Brains Trust?

As a start I'd check the battery terminals are tight & Halfrauds haven't left one loose.

I'd also have a look around the engine fuse box for any sign of overheating.

You should find someone with VAG diagnostics and get the battery coded to the vehicle. If it's an AGM battery in a vehicle with a battery management module, it must be coded to work properly. It may not be the cause of this issue but it is still problematic and won't help you get to the bottom of it.

Thank you for the suggestions - I suspect that my timing stinks in view of the PM’s statement just now and the lockdown.....Mayhaps I won’t need the car too much for a little while......
