Can anyone help me diagnose this?

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have a 2017 Skoda Fabia 1.0 MPI engine and every cold start in a morning it has a awful continuous rattle/ grinding noise but as soon as you place your foot back on the clutch or when the car is warm the noise completely disappears. The car has warranty has been back to Skoda 4-5 times regarding this issue and they can’t find the fault? They’ve apparently changed the clutch release bearing and still continues making the awful noise. Has anyone else had this issue before or know of it so I can get this sorted? The other morning the car was iced up so I started the engine to demist the windows and the noise outside the car sounds like it’s done 300,000 miles 🤣

Thank you very much

Manual gearbox I see, dissimilar rotating materials of the clutch assembly taking differing amounts of time to warm up, I’d imagine.

How many miles has the clutch actually done, what sort of driving conditions?

So would you say this is a normal thing for these cars and I should just leave it?

The car has done 22,000 miles and has long drives to work and back

So the clutch shouldn’t be worn out (but still could be) . You say apparently changed the clutch, why aren’t you certain? Is there any paperwork on what they did under warranty? If they did replace it, something may have been left loose and is now free inside, things could go bad quickly. For me it would be go back to the garage fairly urgently.

They agreed to change the clutch release bearing this car has made this noise for the 6 months I’ve owned it and it’s been a real pain for Skoda to look at the car

Well, when you picked it up didn’t they say something like “We replaced the release bearing, that should have solved the problem. If you have any problems with it, let us know.” ?

You’re being a bit avoidant about confirming that they actually changed the release bearing. Please just clarify about this.

A known concern would be that of the clutch itself and in cases of persistent customer concerns the next step is to replace it. God only knows why they opted for a release bearing first 🤷🏼‍♂️

He hasn’t confirmed that they did change it. He’s said “apparently changed” and “agreed to change”. 🤷‍♂️

I had a Citigo (same engine and presumably gearbox) that made a fair racket in neutral that disappeared when the clutch pedal was pressed. I was not convinced it was normal, so tested several Citigo before I bought mine, and it was definitely a characteristic. They all do it.

Did the car have this noise when you purchased it?

Can the dealer demonstrate to you they all do it eg with another 1.0 MPi Fabia? You need to compare it. It might be normal, just you've not experienced a noisy neutral before.

"The car has warranty has been back to Skoda 4-5 times regarding this issue and they can’t find the fault? They’ve apparently changed the clutch release bearing "

If there was no fault, why did they replace the release bearing? Skoda are not know for replacing parts just because.

If they had the gearbox off, did they advise the tickness of the friction material on the clutch plates?

I thnk a video posted of the noise would help.
