Tow bar

Featured Replies

I purchased a brand new Kodiaq Edition 2.0 TDI Automatic 4x4 DSG in 2020 and just asked the dealer how much to fit a tow bar. They have said £1995 because they would need to upgrade the radiator and grilles to assist with airflow. Is this right?

I only want to pull a small trailer!!

Thanks in advance

There’s been quite a lot of discussion on this point in the forum - use the search and you’ll see it.

Yes, as you’ve found out crazy prices to retrofit a tow bar that would have cost £890 for the electric folding tow bar or £190 for tow bar prep if ordered as factory fit.

All I can say is that I bought my Edition (new) and dealer advised as long as I ordered the 5 seat variant I could fit my own tow-bar.

They even worked with Tow-bar installer and get it fitted before collection.

The tow-bar was correctly coded in to CAN-Bus

No extra cost.

Ok, so I have a 7 seater does that change things then?

For my Edition it was a clear statement from Skoda that you could not fit a tow-bar to a 7 seat variant.

Assume it was total loading on rear suspension .... had to be different design for 7 seats.

Which sounds like usual salesman speak, utter nonsense. The only 7 seater that can’t have a towbar fitted/ or  tow is the 2.0 tdi 150 manual

Thanks Kenny R 👍

So just to understand that attachment, is that all standard to the vehicle??

Mine is the 7 seater Automatic so max towing weight unbraked is 750. So will I still need to have all the other work completed to have the towbar installed?

My 190 PS DSG has 2.2T tow capacity

As does the 2.0 tdi 150 and 190 DSG 7 seater.

Also the 1.4 TSI 150 4x4 DSG and the 2.0 TSI 180/190 4x4 DSG 7 seater.

Ok great, I shall wait to see what the dealership come back to me with. Just think £1995 is so excessive just to pull a tiny trailer.

Not sure where else to go for it as I don't want to impact warranty etc

As soon as you fit a tow bar it is capable of towing 2000kg no matter that you’ve only got a small trailer.

Have you tried a 3rd party tow bar fitter like Phil Taylor. As long as you get the proper bar and it’s wired and coded correctly.  After all the dealer will probably send it to a tow bar fitting outfit and charge you for the privilege.

This was not the 'Salesman nonsese',  at the time they even engaged Skoda UK ... who also confirmed that the 7 Seat could not have a tow bar fitted.

The position (and maybe capabaility) may well have changed but that was a clear position from Skoda UK when I bought in 2018

If I wanted to Tow I had to have 5 seat and if I wanted to tow 2.2 T  (max capacity) I had to have 190PS and DSG gaerbox.

Having manual reduced tow capacirty significantly.

I spent many, many calls & emails on this with Dealer, they with Delear Support and myslef with Customer Support for Skoda UK.

I’m afraid it is nonsense.  I have a 2018 7 seater diesel with a factory fitted towbar. It was the manual gearbox variant that wasnt type approved for towing.

Going back to the original question - use the search. I am pretty sure that it was only the original low power variant of the 1.4 petrol that needed the radiator grill changing and additional cooling added for a towbar. The discussion was a while ago though so I might be wrong.

Ok great, I hope that is the case. I've questioned it with the dealership so will see what they come back to me with.

Yes do that - same as I did ... I know the poster seems to think its nonsesne ..... but when you have it in writing by a main Dealer, you tend to accept that position.

The position may have changed - my car was 2018 ....but it was 100% the offiocial position form Skoda delaer and Skoda UK 'at that time'

So the dealer has confirmed that only the manual gearbox can't tow which is good news but I still need to have the cooling system updated and the grille updated with the version of vehicle I have and will still cost me £1995 so not happy 😡

And this is why I believe that trailer prep should come standard on any car that can tow any reasonable amount.
