Dash cam recommendations for those with DAB

Featured Replies

In the past I’ve had a Chinese cheaply Blueskyea 1080p dashcam that really did work excellently.

i used this in my old B5.5 Passat without any issues whatsoever.

I then tried this in my Octavia and as I have it hardwired it plays absolute havoc with the DAB signal. This is due to the voltage converter to run the camera and the location of the fuses  and power take off in relation to the entertainment system.

I had retrofitted DAB to my Passat and had perfect signal all the time. In the Octavia I loose signal to the point that it’s now redundant.

has anyone else had this issue and if so how did your rectify it??

it’s an excuse to get a new camera if I’m honest but I’d also like to sort the issue with DAB signal interruption.

I have tried the little ferrite filters on the cabling and moving the transformer as far away as possible, but they made it maybe 5% better.

I’m loathed to fork out £20 for a Halfords hardwire kit if it makes little to no difference and I definitely do not want a lead into the 12v supply as this would send my OCD round the bend!!

look forwards to hearing others experiences and opinions.

Also many links on Google about this problem

I just thought the DAB in the Octavia was crap full stop regardless of any plug in ancillaries.  MY 2016 Scout had DAB and it was so poor I actually gave up and used FM instead.  I did fit a dash cam with piggy back fuse but after about 6 months of ownership, the DAB was crap from day one.

Blackvue DR590W in mine, hardwired to the fuse box. No issues with DAB, which works perfectly.

My DAB is near on perfect and I drive a lot of miles in remote areas that aren’t supposed to have signal at all. I will say that the SDL network can be very patchy.

Cheap Chinese hardwire kit off ebay and a snap on ferrite either side of the convertor and I have no issues.

I've seen similar comments on here a couple of times in the past, and it's not my experience. I use DAB almost exclusively and I find it gives perfect reception all around England and Wales. Only time I bother with FM is in France. I guess there must be some units that are simply faulty or perhaps antenna problems..

As far as dashcams go, I have a NextBase 322GW permanently wired thro a piggyback, with a couple of ferrite thingies, and it has no effect on reception.

I'm with you. I'm in rural South Devon and the dab reception is absolutely fine. I can't necessarily get all stations in all areas, but the national ones and the BBC ones are all fine!

The key pointer here - is to use the Ferrite Core that should have been provided in the kit.  Wrap around the incoming power cable into Ferrite Core (usually twice) and this cancels out stray DC RF noise.

As stated I’ve used these already with little to no difference I’m afraid.

Grantown on Spey, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Plymouth - It was equally crap everywhere.  Mine was an Amundsen unit.  On the move I'd be lucky if it lasted 5-6 mins before dropping out.  Must have been luck of the draw.  I'm not a massive radio fan so wasn't an issue.

I have a NEXTBASE 522gw which was fine on it's own until I added a rear view ball shaped camera, then it completely wiped DAB reception.

I moved the rear view camera and added the ferrets which resolved the issue.

We fit loads of nextbase 322gw units with the nextbase hardwire kits and have no issues.

I use the Nextbase 522gw and have the rear module fitted instead of a rear camera. Works perfectly and never had any issues with the DAB signal.

I have a BlueSkySea B1W hardwired in my Octavia. Absolutely no problem with DAB. I used a Nextbase hardwire kit (carried over from my old car) as I found cheap ones caused issues and simply failed to work when it was really cold out.

Can't agree with that at all - I will admit that I listen to far more of my own music than I do radio, however when I do use radio the DAB signal is excellent, very rarely experience any kind of drop out.

As far as Dashcams - I have a Thinkware F770 Front/Rear camera setup, hardwired. No issue at all with Dab signal.

I have a Viofo A118 (now superseded by the A119) hardwired into the fusebox and have no issues with DAB
