Jump start incorrect

Featured Replies

Not sure if anyone can help? No power after this and am looking for a blown fuse under the bonnet? Any ideas?

How did you try and jump start it?

Have you checked the battery voltage?

There are two fuseboxes:

- one on the right of the engine bay

- one behind the glovebox

At a guess, I'd start in the engine bay and check the big midi (not blade) fuses along the front of the fusebox.

Dead Battery? Bump starting a modern car is generally a no-no these days. Okay, if the car if dead, this is what you do:

1) Open up the car manually using the hidden key unlock on the drivers door.

2) Get a trickle charger and connect into the 12v socket. DO NOT START CAR. When there is some basic charge, unlock the central locking.

3) Open up passenger door and unlatch the bonnet.

4) Connect up big charging or jump battery. Positive to Battery and Negative to the terminal behind the battery.

5) Now try starting the car. If still electrically dead, check fuses or call breakdown.

I've always wondered why this is, as even my 20 years old GTi6 advised against it in the manual and yet I never experienced any adverse effects. If the battery is completely dead then sure, but what if it just can't quite kick the starter over, or the battery is fine but the starter has failed?

I too was unsure why a bump start is a not advised. We recently had to call out  our breakdown due to not being able to start our previous car. I asked the question of the breakdown man, he advised that from his understanding it’s really not good for a dual mass flywheels health to be jumpstarted.

I’m not sure how much truth his comments have, but as our previous car was needing a DMF soon, I’m glad we didn’t take the risk in bump starting.

I hope that may help - and I’m sure someone will correct me if the breakdown gentleman was incorrect 👍🏻

Erm, pretty sure the OP was asking about a jump start and didn't mention a bump start? ;)

Hopefully they'll come back and let us know what they did and what they've tried so far :)

The starter wiring failed on my 1yr old Fabia TSI years ago (2012). Skoda Assist turned up and bump started the car down the drive in reverse so that I could drive it to the dealer in convoy with him.

The OP said "jump start" which to me means booster leads connected to another (running) car's battery?

I have now had to do this 3 times on lease 2018 VRS Octavia. Central locking still ok and lights on but no chance of it starting. Immediately after first instance, it had a 380 mile round trip (business) and i thought that would be it sorted.

Happened twice since and I wouldn't trust it to start after a week. Ironic that I've had to jump start it from wife's 13 year old Zafira diesel. Have to do an hours driving at high revs every week  to stop it doing it again. Goes back to lease company in 2 months.....

New battery required? Try a decent battery charger and see whether it can be recovered. If Green Blob on battery is showing you have a dead battery.
