Aye up!

Chopping in the Golf for a new Karoq SE Drive 1.5 Manual. Should be ready for collection in 10 days. Never had a new car before always, gone for 2-3 year old, so slightly excited.

Do you still run engines in?

I notice there was issues with the 1.5 kangarooing, is that issue been fixed?

Anything I need to look out for?

You still have to use sensibly to start with, plus brakes and tyres need a few hundred miles to wear in before they reach peak performance.

The car can still cruise happily at 70 though way below any temporary rev limit. Not like old days when you couldn't exceed 40 then 50 etc for hundreds of miles.

The manual recommends running in as follows:

New vehicle - Running in the engine
Driving style during the first 1500 km determines the quality of the engine run-in process.

  • During the first 1000 km, rev the engine to max. 3/4 of the highest permissible engine speed and avoid using a trailer.
  • Over the next 500 km, the engine speed can be slowly increased.

Depending on driving style and operating conditions, the engine consumes some oil, up to 0.5 l/1000 km. Consumption may be higher over the next 5000 km.

New brake pads
New brake pads do not provide the optimum braking effect during the first 200 km, they have to be worn in first. Therefore, drive very carefully.

New tyres
New tyres do not have optimum grip for the first 500 km. Therefore, drive very carefully.

When you collect it, make sure the wheels and body are undamaged, as it will be difficult later to prove you didn't do it later. Also, check that it has all its expected accessories such as the net system in the boot, the 'key' to remove locking wheel bolts, etc.

Have fun,

PS: You can download a copy of the Owners Manual here: ŠKODA Owner's Manuals (skoda-auto.com)

This is worthwhile to get a head start on the walk-through the dealer should give you (which may be abbreviated because of Covid) and because the printed manual omits any details about using the Infotainment system (ie radio, satnav if fitted, etc)

Thanks guys, so no need to drive like the vicar but at the same time for a red line a day keeps the carbon away.

the infotainment system looks complicated but I'm sure it's not.

Amongst all this advice you also must not let the engine labour and vary your speed i.e. don't run at constant revs for any period of time.

If you take a long motorway trip try to vary your cruising speed by 5-10 mph every 20 minutes or so.
