N00b Questions - Some Help Required

Featured Replies

Evening, I picked up an '02 1.9SDI Estate knowing it needed a bit of work, mostly cosmetic and interior stuff not working

I haven't really given it a proper going over but what I have found is the following: -

  1. Drivers door lock won't lock the doors but will open them (haven't been able to try the remote key, doesn't work, assuming battery is flat)
  2. No buzzer/warning to advise the lights have been left on
  3. Electric front windows don't work/work intermittently
  4. A/C doesn't work (I'm assuming it just needs a regas - hopefully)
  5. Front 12v/cigar socket doesn't work, the one in the boot does
  6. Starter motor screeches a bit, looks easy enough to replace
  7. Rear wash wipe doesn't spray water, from what I've read there are 2 areas to check in the engine bay and one under the C pillar trim, hopefully an easy fix

I will use the search function but just curious if the issue with the electric windows and the door locking is connected, maybe a faulty module or something?

Interior is pretty grubby so I'm looking to replace with a MK3 Fabia set. Presumably the door cards from the MK2 or MK3 won't fit?

I think that's everything for now, any help suggestions will be most welcome

This is usually casued by a very common issue - drivers' door lock unit microswitch failure.

The locking issue you're having is probably the lock unit too. The solder joints in them can fail due the fatigue from the countless times opening/closing of the door, or the unit can fail in other ways.

And regarding the window issue - the electronics for the windows are inside the drivers' window motor unit, which is behind the door card. This unit can fail.

Sometimes the wires can be broken inside the rubber door bellows too.

The door cards from a Mk2 or Mk3 definitely won't fit. The seats from a Mk2 will fit though.

@TMBThanks, that gives me a few things to have a look at

Noticed the rear footwells are wet too, looks like a fairly straightforward fix sealing up the rear door carriers (I'll check the rear wash wipe pipe hasn't become disconnected too)

Hi Rob

Yeah the most of your issues are well covered on the forum

I have #5 and #7 and still putting it off ! #3 is the only issue that will give you hassle at MOT time !

Get her rested then tip away at the other issues yourself ! Good clean and fix the leaks will make a big difference - nice to see another survivor getting a second chance !

I don't think you need to have functioning windows for MOT?

For number 6 try cleaning the connections (careful with the main positive one, disconnect battery negative first).

Can't explain it, but not long into ownership of our Fabia the starter motor was screeching after it did its work.  Went to change it but was thwarted by a socket set lacking an 18mm. Cleaned up the connections, tried it again and everything was working right.  Still have the unused spare starter somewhere that hasn't been needed since. 6 or 7 years ago at least now.

Window regulators always go in mk1 fabias, my car's the same. I've gotten good at finessing the button to use them or I just put the key in the door to put them both up or down.

For the cigarette lighter it could just be a blown fuse or the connection on it is loose. Mine never worked and I only recently noticed its fuse was gone, works fine now.

You'd be amazed what some interior cleaner and few hours of scrubbing can do to refresh an old interior, if you're ever in Asda get the carplan 2 in 1 upholstery shampoo, i've had great results with it.

My cars starter sometimes drags too. Might be one of the connections like Wino said because both the old and the one I replaced it with did it.
