Oil question

Featured Replies

I have searched the various forums but have been unable to find the answer to my question.

I have a New Octavia 2.0 TD PDI DSG. When I got the car just over a year ago I bought a couple of litres of oil to keep in the boot for emergency top up - this was Castrol SLX LongLife II 0W-30 which conforms to VW 506.01 and was recommended for the variable servicing option. I went to Halfords today to buy some more but was told that it has been replaced by Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 0W-30. However, looking at the Castrol website it would appear that the oil I should have bought is Castrol Edge 5W-30.

Can anyone advise?

I'm sure a tech will be along to answer your query.

Just wondering how many miles you have on your car and how many litres of oil it has used. I have 4,500 miles on my car and carry a 1 litre top up bottle but it's just gathering dust in the boot because the car never seems to use any oil.

The oil light came on whilst I was on the M25 last weekend. I pulled over as soon as I could and put in a litre of oil which took the level up to the full mark on the dipstick. That is the second litre of oil I have put in in 11,000 miles.

In the manual it says that it is normal for diesel engines to use oil and that the consumption can be up to 0.5L/1000m.

The word I got from a tech at a VW garage was that the 1.9 can use up to 1.25 litres in the first 5,000 miles and the 2.0 can use up to 1 litre in the first 5,000 miles on average. After that the usage should fall off a bit.

I agree with your conclusion. Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 0W-30 doesn't meet any VW specs whereas Castrol Edge 5W-30 meets the new VW 504 00/507 00 specs. The latter is specified for your car - as is 506 01 - for flexible service interval use.

It's very confusing - I went to Halfords the other day to get some oil (just in case) to top up the Skoda Octavia 2, as it is only 2 weeks old - not that it has used any, and I just stood there, conpletely bewildered at the immense choice of different oils there were from which to choose.

I eventually asked a young lad, and he without hestation pointed me in the direction of Castrol Edge 5W-30. "You have to be very careful for VW group engines to get exctly the right oil", he volunteered.

It is nice to see that someone in Halford actually knows what they're talking about, but BY GOD was it dear, nearly 40 quid!

Thanks for the replies. I have been back to Halfords and exchanged the oil I originally bought for Castrol Edge 5W-30. But all very confusing.........

One of my local Halfords runs a decent servicing department, and they do seem to know what they are talking about. Mine's a petrol and he knew immediately Castrol 0W-30 = £14 a litre but have only used that one litre in 7200 miles and right now it is still on full.

Castol Edge 5w-30 says replaces SLX Longlife II on the bottle :)

Do all VAG engins have a thirst for Oil ?

I have a new RVS and that has used 1 ltr in the last 7000, topped up with Edge 5w-30 from Halfords £13.00 though !!!!

My past 2 Scoobys never drank any, must keep an eye on this one I think.

Gaz

Mine is an old octy TDi 110 and I used about 1 liter of SLX Longlife II over 27k miles. I am guessing that yours will settle down, however I was advised by a mechanic who did a lot of VW car work as an independant to top the thing up wiith oil, drive around getting it up to temp and then give it a really good run, keeping the revs up and what have you. Apparantly a lot of the leaking seems to be where the engine never really wore in.

Not sure how true this is, but might be worth a try if it keeps drinking it. Obviously i don't mean redlining the thing, and anything youtry you do so entirely at your own risk etc etc.

Wierd, that appeared twice, oh well -
