Skoda RoofRack on Superb III liftback - cabin noise levels

Featured Replies

Applying any roof rack will increase wind noise levels. This is certainly the case on my estate with roof rails, so I can't see how you could avoid this on a saloon. So called wingbars seem to be the way to minimise noise.

Installing a roof rack increases the noise anyway. Though I have Thule wing bars, it is a bit noisy (but I still can here the kids and my wife speaking to me normally. They don't need to yell at me ;) !). I can't say if it would be noisier with other roof racks. They're the first I have.

IMHO, the noise is also strongly dependent on other factors too:

- Your driving speed (air flow noises increase with speed)

- The roof box shape itself

- How the roof box is loaded (empty it may become a 'soundbox' with vibrations due to air flow around the box)

- The distance between both roof racks (the closer they are, the more the front part of the roof box is cantilevered and can thus oscillate / bounce upon air flow)

- The distance between the front rack and the top of windshield (to minimize the sound it's better to set the front rack in a "quite" air flow zone...), but this must be "balanced" with previous bullet point...

All a question of compromises... ;)

Thank you guys for the reply.

I understand that noise will be more prominent with any roof rack, but i was afraid specifically about the mechanism on saloon/liftback version of the car, which seems those clips creates space in door rubber isolation.

OK, I better understand your point now... ;)

I don't think this while be the key contributor to overall noise level increase....

Don't forget that the Superb Mk3 is fitted with double rubber seals on each doors. Thus I think it won't be very noticeable.

No, that won't affect the seal towards the inside cabin.

When u open the door, u'll notice a thicker rubber seal further in.

I use roof racks occasionally.

The only wind noise u get is from the actual roof rack bars.

Thank you guys for the confirmation, pitty i don't have integrated tow ball, which is probably the best option :)
