1.4 TSI 122 (CAXA) rattle

How much do you/(alternatively, did you) trust this garage?

The obvious things seem to be spark plugs and faulty assembly of the timing gear

Spark plugs could be fitting of the wrong grade of plug, or something as simple as getting an oily thumb print on the insulator.

One of those is a bit easier to excuse than the other.

I've not looked in detail, but I assume that it is possible to assemble the timing gear one tooth out.

In a sense, provided the garage agree to fix it without cost to you, it isn't a great concern, although it would dent confidence in them, going forward and you might reconsider your use of them for future stuff.

I've used the garage for many years - never done anything wrong with my tdi but I don't know whether he does that many timing chains. I was tempted to go and buy a spark plug and try it, but don't really think I should be having to fiddle with the plugs etc myself! Let's hope the timing is correct, as far as I'm aware there's no real way to gauge that using VCDS unfortunately :| My days of tinkering with cars to any great depth are long over and I only have strength in one hand so opt to get things done rather than doing them myself these days!

Thank you so much for your reply

Just for info I'm using the Bosch F 026 407 183 without issue.

Previously had genuine VAG 03C115561H which BTW according to Amazon is incompatible with my 1.2 TSI engine!

Do you know which spark plugs were fitted?

Hey,

They're NGK PZFR6R plugs. The car went back to the garage that did the chain who claimed they couldn't feel any misfire and that their solus wouldn't connect to the car. I'm now wondering if anything should have been cleared or reset using that tool or VCDS after the new chain went in. I've checked plugs, air filter still clean and there's not a lot more I can check? I swapped the plug on cylinder 4 for a new one just to be sure it wasn't a doa plug but it made no difference. There is a little soot fouling on the plug that I did remove, it didn't take much force to remove it either. Does anyone know if the engine is actually intelligent enough to know there's a misfire on a specific cylinder or is it based on what the knock sensor is seeing? Should have got her a diesel version as I'm a little more comfortable fault finding on those simple beasts.

Thanks so much for your help.

Figured I'd update this! Car was still misfiring until I disconnected the Lambda sensor and idle went completely smooth - so I'm suspecting the lambda sensor is not healthy. The bigger irritation is the ticking / tapping on throttle / accelerating. It stops when you're slowing down with no accelerator applied - cannot for the life of me work out what the noise is though! 😞

Hi All

I'm a bit concerned about the sounds coming from my 2010 Octavia 1.4TSI DSG (79k) and wondering if its timing chain / tensioner.

I know it's not the quietest of engines but I've had the car 10 years and I'm sure there is a metallic, scraping sound that is new.

I videoed it this morning both cold and after the engine had warmed, engine bay closed, window open.

The car does a lot very short journeys in the morning, that leave the engine only just warmed by the end of the trip (school run). I also recently noticed a rapidly reduced coolant level, which I assume is a separate issue but I mention in case its relevant.

Grateful for any thoughts.

Thanks

Quick update.

The water pump was "hanging off". Hence noise and coolant loss.

Fixed for £270 at a great independent specialist. Car feels great.

Obviously a different issue. Apologies!
