Clicking sound from engine bay

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have what can only be described as a clicking sound (no real pattern to it, on cold start up...... it’s on the left hand side of the engine as you look at it from the front (alternator side) goes after start up. It doesn’t go when clutch pressed, nor does it increase with engine speed. As it’s not the gearbox side it’s got me puzzled........ So if anyone has any experience of this or an idea please share !

N80 evap purge solenoid valve is on the left. Wondering if it might be coming from that.

Does it sound anything like this?....

Thanks for the reply, it doesn’t sound like that it’s not a constant sound, and from what I’m finding it’s only on start up (cold engine) I’ll try and get a recording tonight. It’s a mk1 1.9vrs so quite a loud engine in fairness..... but it’s just a mechanical click sort of sound

Bit of an update, someone mentioned to check out the alternator pulley for seizing, this is not the case pulley moves freely and clutch works on it too, I’ll be removing the aux belt at some point and seeing if the noise is related to what spins on the belt side of things! Any one else have any suggestions ?

The vacuum/solenoid block on top of the offside strut tower may be worth homing in on to see if it may be the source of the clickage.

Right tool belt off, alternator pulley fine , aux belt tensioner rattles like mad and moves too freely so that’s going to be replaced....... looks like one bolt in reverse of housing is this an easy job? (Was dark last night when working on car) hopefully you don’t have to remove loads of stuff to get to it ??? And advise appreciated

Replace the belt while you're at it, when you have the new tensioner and belt in hand it should be obvious what needs removing.

Yes forgot to mention a new belt, can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t....... is it easy access from back to securing bolt ?

The tensioner is usually supplied as a complete assembly which will be held on with a couple of bolts, you may be able to get the pulley by itself in which case the bolt holding it is a left handed thread.

Which bit are you replacing?

These are the ones the motor factors are showing. From what I could make out last night, I didn’t see the bolts on the 47b one

Yours is the second one held on by three bolts.

I’ll have a closer look when I get home but didn’t see the bolts last night (it’s a 2005 Fabia vrs pd)

Interesting, maybe you've got the first type after all.

Yes had the shop cross reference it several times, it’s a Skoda Fabia 2005 vrs pd. bolt goes in reverse of unit, quite how is a different story 🤦🏻‍♂️

Items 17, 22 here. Looks like access to the bolt head is right underneath alternator.  May be awkward without alternator removal, but probably worth trying.

The other style of tensioner (item 2)  appears to be for non-A/C cars.

Wino that’s amazing, spotted it and yes not going to be easiest thing to get too but defiantly manageable!! The diagram was very helpful! Thanks so much mate really appreciate it! I don’t have much mechanical knowledge, but like to have a go where I can, and yes I know my limitations....... “thanks” once again 👌🏻
