Hi there. I am the very happy owner of a Yeti DSG 140 diesel. Almost the top of the range here in France when new in November 2011. It has now done 142,000km and all trouble free. I get it serviced every year and frankly it is a joy to own. But I am concerned that there may be some major engine work needed in the near future. Can anyone advise what may be necessary such as a timing chain renewal or major overhaul?

The diesel Yeti does not have a timing chain it has a cam belt that should have been replaced at 4 years and that belt then every 5 years.
On another forum there is a 2wd 110 Yeti that has passed 370,000km

Do Skoda not say at 5 yrs for the cam belt?

Thanks for this answer. I have the servicing done at an independent garage and so they probably aren't looking at the bigger issues just the oil, filters etc. I think I need to go to the main Skoda dealer and have a chat with them. It's a big ticket item.

At 88k miles, your car is only just run in! Loads of life left in the car yet. :) :thumbup:

 

The cambelt is fairly standard. Any competent garage should be able to replace it. Maybe there is a VAG speciaist in your area? Doesn't have to go to Skoda.

 

NB: I would make sure the water pump and tensioners are replaced at the same time as the belt.

They do now.  I believe at the time, the quoted interval for the originally installed belt was 4 years.

Early ones were every four years, but this was alter changed to every 5 years.

I wonder if that was because the belts were improved, or same belt but Skoda wanting to change to 5 yrs for changes sake?

In Australia Skoda don’t talk about years for cam belt replacement they state kilometres which are 100,000 for 2.0lt diesel. My Yeti has done 280,000k and had two belts replaced. Special tools are required to replace cam belt so my local mechanic could not do it. Had to be done by VAG specialist. Other than that only had the air conditioning tensioner replaced in motor. Can’t complain about that 😀

All cambelts come with tensioners as far as I know. Mind, I'm not a mechanic. Two of our Octis had their belts replaced, and both got the tensioners and w/pumps done at the same time.

 

Have a look on here to see if it helps https://www.gatesautocat.com/  Dayco, Continental etc all have parts catalogues you can check with using reg no/VIN.

 

 

Water pump and cam belt tensioner changed each time the cam belt was replaced, as recommended by Skoda.

Thanks, I'll make a note of that for when my 5yr service is due next year.

Is there any advantage to having the cam belt done early, say 4 years? I realise this will bring the subsequent changes forward by a year.

None what so ever Dale, just leave it until 5 years.

Knowing my luck, mine will fail at 4 yrs 11 months :biggrin:

My MK1 Octi was supposed to have a new belt every 48 months. It got one every 60 months or so, wasn't going to worry about being 25% over scheduled replacement time. Close enough IMHO.:)

Yes but read my quote again for his 2011 car.
