Starter motor help

Featured Replies

Hi,

Had an issue with my starter motor where the solenoid was engaging but the motor wasn't spinning. Took it off yesterday to clean up all contacts and get the part number off it. Back on and it's working, but I want to prepare for if it packs up...............

The p/n on it is VW AG 02A 911 024 G and it has 11 teeth. Looking on Ebay and a supplier has said that when he checks the p/n it lists his as the right one, but it only has 10 teeth, so surely can't be the right one as I imagine it will grind????

Also reading on here, suggestion is to change the bushes on the original rather that buy an aftermarket one, but how do I find the right bushes for my start motor?

Cheers for any help :)

Vijay

It will have been corrosion on the main battery feed connection, assuming that you removed the oxide before refitting then you wont need the spare one for another 15 years.

Its the only time that my MK1 ever let me down & required me to roll down the hill to bump start it.

Be brilliant if you're right :)  I did indeed clean up the battery terminals, main feed wire to the starter clamps and all connectors on the starter motor.

Would be useful to have the information anyway if anyone can help, just in case it does go.

Glad to say you're advice has been right, starter hasn't had a hiccup since removing and cleaning all contacts :)

The starter on mine was bulletproof, it was my first diesel and I never learned how to prime the injection system after running out of fuel, at one time the sender guage played up and running dry was a frequent occurrence, that starter several times cranked the engine for what seemed like 10 minutes and smoke was billowing out of the windings but it never gave up, it did 18 years and 500000 kms without even a change of brushes, just the one time with the corroded terminal which the abuse cannot have helped.

Appreciate any urgent help as I'm off the road

Just spoke to a very helpful guy at Apec who confirmed the 10 teeth starter motor will mesh perfectly with the flywheel
