Fabia 64 plate Monte Carlo ride quality

Featured Replies

Hi - please forgive my ignorance upfront - I've been looking through topics but had no luck with answers.  Bought my Monte a couple of years back (64 plate, 1.2), mostly because of the look, the responsiveness and the 'none more black' styling. :emo:
Unfortunately, my local area is a pothole blackspot, there are speedbumps on every other street and I'm now driving the long way everywhere just to avoid rough surfaces because the ride is SO hard!
Is there anything I can do to improve this? Tyres? Suspension?  I don't want to have to sell her, but the firmness is shaking my teeth loose.

Just change the tyres and rims to a comfortable size and the problem will be solved.

From the photo on your other thread, it looks like you have 205/40R17 tyres.

Take a look at these Fabia MK2 alloy rims on "eshop skoda cz"

6Jx14 ET37 Alloy Rim (2659CZK is about £87)

In the UK the OEM fitment is 205/40 R 17 on Trinity alloys.

Normally £400 is what they change hands for, wheels and tyres.

Fifteen inch wheels with 195/50/15 are the best compromise between handling and comfort but it depends on the size of your front brakes, I have 288's and they completely fill the wheel, no way I could fit fourteens.

For 14" wheels to fit, the OP would need to check that the diameter of the front brake discs is 256mm and not 288mm.

I would guess the 1.2TSI 63kW/86PS version would have the 256mm front discs, and the 1.2TDI 77kW/105PS version would have the 288mm front discs...but that is just a guess...so do check.

If you know the build codes, then both 1ZE and 1ZG have 256mm front discs, and 1ZC and 1ZD have 288mm front discs. Some of the build codes are on a white label stuck under the carpet in the boot area.

There is no issue fitting 15" Steel Spare wheels to TSI or TDI Monte Carlo's or vRS with standard brakes.

Yep; 205/40R17 (and 205/40ZR17 on the backs).

This is great detailed advice that I can move forward with. Thanks for your time and knowledge!

I'm in the same boat as you. I actually bust a front tyre a while back just from a pothole in a bad spot, I had to get 2 new tyres to match on the front. I bought a set of 16" Mk1 vRS alloys for my mk1 but I'm toying with the idea of cleaning them up, putting 2 new tyres on and running them on my monte carlo.  The roads around me are lethal even at the speed limit.

I'll include a pic of one of the vrs wheels put up against my car. I might test fit them next day i'm out.

The backroads are so bad that an accident is possible if you hit a pothole hard with forty profile tyres while cranked over.

I dont know what cranked over means but yeah. I was lucky I was in town so I limped it back home. Just. I imagine some of the more rural parts of the UK would be as bad as me. My car is in decent nick but the roads around me are killing the standard bushes in my car. New drop links not too long ago and now something else is starting to clunk in the front.

Cranked over means cornering hard, it's biker slang.

The more you know lol.

I put on some 16" vRS wheels onto my monte carlo to try them, thought I should put them up here in case you were thinking of changing wheels still. I like them on this car but I'll probably paint them if I plan on running them proper.

As much as I like the Mk1 RS wheels....................mmmm look to small...........

Ehh, maybe putting a bit more tyre would improve things a bit. More tyre is a welcome thing for the roads I'm driving on. I remember being told 'in England they drive on the left of the road, in Ireland we drive on whats left of the road'. Our roads are a joke.

totally understand why your doing it, my RS is harsh anyway and roads in general are not designed for rubber band tyres..........and when you hit a pot hole...........jeez.

The wheels need refurbed no matter what car they're going on so I think a colour close to the monte carlo wheels on these will look good. These currently have a 195/45 r16 tyre on so if they had a 205/45 r16 put on them it would be almost perfect and I wouldnt need to fiddle with the speedo.

Been down with the virus so only getting round to this now.  All the packages I'm looking at for 15" rims (I'm trying to get black to match the car) are coming up with 195/55/15 tyres - is that an issue?
Will that extra 5% cause problems?
Thanks!

No it won't cause problems and will give you a bit more comfort to boot.

According to wheel-size.com 195/55R15 is a standard tyre size on the Fabia MK2 1.2TSI

wheel-size.com often make mistakes, so see what the label says on the inside of your petrol flap. Maybe even take a photo of it. The label will tell you what the standard tyre sizes are and what the associated tyre pressures should be.

Finally bought and (had) fitted:

15" Romac Pulse Gloss Black Wheels
195/55/15 VR Yokohama Advan Fleva V701 Tyres

Looks great and drives like a new car!

Bloke at the local fitter advised keeping one of the old Trinity's on-board as a spare.IMG_20210910_123658.thumb.jpg.1b716aa89c826f0cd8722a7efd97bafc.jpg

Thanks for the recommendations & advice.

Those look great! Love the meaty tyres too.

...All it needs now is the old style, black numberplate, with silver letters/numbers! Oh, and a set of Heko's.
