Driving Lights (Lightbar/spotlights etc)

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone!

I'm trying to get an LED Light bar installed on my Kodiaq, need the extra lights to avoid pesky roos on my frequent trips out western QLD.

I've run into a snag however, there isn't a fuse or traditionally analog electrical 'switch' that changes the headlights from low to high beam in the Kodiaq have  (has LED headlights). Due to the regulations in Australia i can't legally just have them wired to an isolated switch, they have to come on and off with the high beams. I also don't have Auto High Beam which would have circumvented this issue.

Does anyone know if there is a wiring harness/adaptor that allows driving lights to be installed and triggered by the High Beams. Or do they make one for a Tiguan maybe that would work? Kodiaqs are still low volume vehicles over here so if it shares enough parts with another VW group vehicle that I can use a harness for that it would be amazing!

PS: the driving lights on the Kodiaq are exceptional, and i know it sounds excessive to want more but trust me... .you cannot have enough illumination out here hahah

Unfortunately no, the LED headlights' controller is integrated in the headlight housing (it's actually a separate module but is screwed/plugged in to the headlight housing  - "LED LEIMO MODULE" in the picture at the bottom).  There isn't a relay for high beam as such as the LED units are temperature monitored and if they get too hot, the output is reduced (probably by using PWM).

I have a wiring diagram but it's 60 MB so can't upload it here.  The relevant screenshots out of it are below.

Anyway, if you're handy and game, you could open up the headlight housing and tap a sense wire off the high beam emitter and use that to trigger a MOSFET or similar but of course your warranty will be voided by that.  Or pop off the 'leimo' module and try to attach to that :) The diagram shows that there is  a plug from the main beam emitter to the leimo module and you could access that.  Unfortunately it's on the underside of the headlamp unit so you'll need to remove the front bumper which means you need to remove the wheel arch surrounds (and the clips on these ALWAYS break on me).

There is another possible solution, the central electronics module has spare outputs that can be configured ex-factory as outputs.  These are typically used for cars that are configured ex factory as taxis, driver training or safety cars etc to trigger auxiliary devices.  I don't know how to configure these but I suspect it'd need VAS or ODIS.  AU dealers will have NFI about these.

Screenshot from the wiring diagram, you can see the big grey box "MX2" is the whole headlight housing unit, the A27 'leimo' controller module is within that and the headlamps are connected internally within the housing, and not exposed to the outside wiring.

Off topic, but has anyone seen the ‘static bending light’ in use?

Yep, I initially suspected that it didn't exist but I have seen it come on over (probably) 15km/hr. Unlike the cornering fogs, it fades on and off.  As I slowed at the corner it seemed to transition from the static cornering light to turning the fog on.

Ah, it’s that light. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it turn on at high speeds, maybe I’ll have a tinker around with VCDS sometime.

There didn't seem to be an output test to turn it on via VCDS last time I looked.  Maybe in a newer version....

Isn’t there a setting to change the speed range where it works?

I have, but i`s really unnoticeable. I can see it at low speed in a wide corner when leaving home.

Tonight I finally went and changed the settings from the default max speed of 40kph and minimum steering angle (seems to not be consistent, may actually be yaw angle) of 30deg to 120kph and 15deg. Those settings work noticeably better on windy country roads at night.

Good point. Which module you tweaked?

STG 09 - for my car it says stationary cornering light or something like that. In German it'll say statisches kurvenlicht.

Funnily enough I captured the mysterious static cornering light in action the other day, the video below shows it and the cornering fog too.

The static cornering lamp was coming on and off even at 60-ish km/hr.

Yeah, still not quite as good as the AFS system I had on my old B6 Passat which had the turning bixenon projectors. I still think that system in the Passat was better than my current daily Mk7 R with a similar AFS system. Would've loved for the Kodiaq facelift to get swivelling lights like the B8 Passat but I doubt that.

Anyways, I'll probably head out tonight to record a video of how the lights behave with my adjustments.

@wokwon the bend lights on mine seem to come on at the same time as the fogs corner function unlike yours.

Other than stuffing around via the supplied diagram is there any other way to wire up an LED small light bar?

Whilst I live in the Central West of NSW (about 3.5hr drive from Sydney) having some extra illumination would be nice at times. However if the LED headlights on the Kodiaq/Koroq are ok I may just have to suck it up.

Get any ledbar (Lazer, if pockets are deep) and let the dealer to fit them. You only need an additional rocker in the cabin (this one for example https://www.carsystems.eu/skoda-park-assist-push-button-3t0927123b,id1775.html) and probably some relay if you want them to work with high beam.

I find the high beam quite good but in your red plainlands...you never know.

Yes, this is a good option too. Swedish stuff, usually not regrettable.

Ok for those that have the Euro but for someone who is in Australia, the currency conversion would make this not a viable option from a cost point alone. Add in shipping and it becomes a joke.
