"gearbox error ok to drive"

Featured Replies

hi everyone, hope someone can give me advice,  i am buying a superb 67 plate 150 ps se L executive estate, on the test drive it was perfect its done 36k miles so i didn't expect  anything less, now the stressful part i was driving home and a warning light came on with the above message which went off and left a yellow warning triangle i took it back and the guys felt as bad as i did, they couldn"t have been any more helpful there mechanic connected a diagnostic pad to the obd, and a few different faults came up one mentioned a air intake voltage problem or something similar, they give me a small car to drive home while its booked into skoda marshall in northampton this morning, part of me wants to walk away from it and its the one in 1000 what will have problem after problem, should i be worried or not?

update skoda northampton told me the tech couldn't replicate the fault so if they get a chance someone will drive it tomorrow and see if the error message comes back on......not happy!

If your car had been for sale for some time before you bought it and it drained the battery, this can bring up some error codes.  Once these are cleared and you've driven the car, they should all be clear.

Have you had any news on your car yet?

penpusher ....i rang skoda northampton today and they told me that the mechanic drove it and the warning codes came up so he took it back checked t it out and it was low oil in the gearbox amongst other things, it was a mobility car before hand and they sent it to a back street garage to do an oil service on the gearbox and they never

put enough oil in, so soon as i heard this from skoda i then rang the garage i was buying it off and i told them i am backing out the deal and i want a full refund £15,500

they were ok about it but they paid the money back in my account straight away, and i got a full refund of sheilas wheels because i was insured for under 14 days ....so apart from the train to leicester which cost £28 i am quite happy i think i dodged a bullet, and i went with my instinct and walked away, looking back i dont think it was the smoothest of drives there was quite a bit of road noise and i think it was a bit of a harsh ride, i test drove a corolla sports touring a few months ago and the ride was like a rolls royce the suspension was brilliant but the car was to small inside, so the hunt goes on for my retirement car.

Strange about the Motability bit as my wife's car was collected and serviced by the supplying dealer (Honda).

Certainly sounds as if you avoided some major bills by backing out.

But does paddywack1878 mean the garage that supplied the car sent it to out to have the gearbox oil changed rather than Motability?  I don't know if the car was manual or DSG, but if it was DSG it wasn't due to be changed as it had only covered 36k miles and the oil doesn't need changing until 40k.

Was it a manual gearbox or a DSG?

the car had a dsg 7 speed box, bob gerard garage are going to ring mobility next week to find out why they didnt send it to skoda for the work, but its probably because of costs?  the car also had a replacement agm battery changed by the RAC, and it had rear discs and pads changed at the last mot, bob gerard told me they have changed a lot of rear discs on these cars interesting, i will look out for this in the future , but in the mean time i have to try and get my £150 road tax back of dvla, and i am still waiting for my insurance refund , its just one big balls up of a year and this caps it all off.

I had the rear discs changed at 3 years old.  Mine's a 2016 and I've only done 27k to date.  I think the original discs are made of cardboard!

I'm surprised if Motability sent the car to a back street garage for the gearbox oil change.  On their website, they state that servicing and MOTs will be carried out by the appropriate dealer as I assume it's all part of the package included in the price when they buy their cars from the manufacturers.  My brother-in-law had a Motability car for a number of years until he sadly passed away last year and they always went back to dealers for any servicicing or repairs.

so the garage was right about the rear discs? as for the mystery surrounding the gearbox oil, who knows whats happened, bob gerard garage told me they will let me know if they get to the bottom of it, so the lesson i have learned from this is dont be buying a car without a propper test drive, but even then you can still end up with a lemon.

It can’t have been a back street garage that motability had the gearbox oil service done at, they always use main dealers for any repair work or Kwik fit if it’s a tyre issue.

i did ask the garage i was buying the car off to let me know what mobility tell them, and i will report back on here, but since i pulled out the sale i dont think i am on there priority list at the moment.

It all looks a bit fishy to me as I can't imagine anyone at Motability looking up the service details for the car and booking it in for a gearbox oil change at a back street garage when it wasn't even due until the car had covered 40,000 miles, unless someone working there gets a backhander from the garage if they receive work from them?

Motability Finance have the Lease Cars they own and that have a Service Package with the Manufacturers Service at the Approved Repairers / Main Dealerships.

About 3 months before handback the car goes for the Service & MOT and that is at Main Dealerships. The Brake Fluid is changed, and the DSG serviced if due.

An inspection is done and any warranty work carried out.

Then the car is sold at a BCA (British Car Auction.)  Using the pictures taken at Handback at a Motability Approved Dealers.

No Back Street Auto's or Independents are used for Servicing as the Cars at the end of lease are sold with FMDSH and the car serviced to the Manufacturers Guidelines Schedule.

PS

My last Motability car handed back at the end 2019 had the Brake Discs corrosion as an advisory at the MOT, and they were left as were.

Also an advisory on the nearside Wiper Blade torn, yet the Skoda / Seat Dealership did not have one to fit.  LOL.

So i got the car away and took it back days later for a new one.

Arnold Clark bought it from BAC and then a few months later did a MOT on it after fitting new discs.

Then they sat with it for more than a year without finding a buyer.

Before I retired, I worked as an accountant and I prepared accounts for a few independent garages selling cars who'd buy ex-Motability cars from auction.  They'd be keen to buy these if they could get them at a good price as they knew they were serviced and maintained to high standards.

They were not serviced to a high standard.  Just to Main Dealership Standards.  So to Manufacturers Recommendations.

That has become Variable Servicing so not fixed.

The Tyres are done at Kwik Fit who will even ignore the Tech at the Dealership saying tyres are worn and the track should be checked.

Kwik Fit will maybe fit new tyres, or maybe say they are fine and not bother their backside.

This was my 'Motability' car getting MOT'd 3 months before 3 year old at the Skoda / SEAT Dealership and how it was when bought by Arnold Clark after handback other than a 1 new wiper blade fitted.

The tyres on were the ones i put back on after having run the car most of the time on Winter Tyres.

They were taken off because they really were crap, but the car had to go back with these ContiSeal tyres fitted.

The brakes were seldom used as i used the DSG for slowing more than the brakes ever were.

They were red with rust in the first year of being on the road anyway.

An Alhambra TDI with e-Brake.

Update on the gearbox issue, I had a call of bob gerard leicester today, skoda northampton rang them and said the low oil in the gearbox came out the factory like that, and even tho its out of warranty they will foot the bill, which is a new gearbox called a MECHATRONIC, that's what they called it, so i defo dodged a 30 caliber size bullet.

Someone will be buying that in a month or two i just hope the young lads fitting a new gearbox no what there doing, is this a common problem i wonder?

The new Mechatronic Control Unit is not a new gearbox.

The low oil from the factory is total fantasy on a DSG with 36,000 miles done over 3 year.

There is much to be taken here with a pinch of salts.  Actually buckets of salt.

Just to give you an idea about the replacement of the MCU.

i dont care what went wrong with the gearbox to be honest mate , i am just glad it happened while on a test drive  and not six months later.

  • 4 years later...

My Superb Tsi 1.5 has the DSG hear box and Skoda say the gear box oil change is not necessary , Skoda dealer won't change the oil and an independent service centre refuse to change the oil !

The gear box gear change is not as good as it could be and in sport mode the gears do appear to hang on !!

If you really want it changed go to an Automatic Gearbox Specialist.

There are 2 oils. In the MCU an in the box.

There is no Service Schedule, recommendations, guidelines or advice from VW Group / Skoda to service the DQ200 DSG.

In Sport the DSG should be holding to a higher RPM before changing up, the whole point of S.

?

How many miles has the car done?

EDIT.

Why are those that gave advice or information to have the DQ200 DSG serviced not prepared to do it?

Edited by Ootohere

Hi , car has covered 38000 miles.

All three just state the gearbox oil change is not required.

Re the sport mode I understand that the change will be at a higher RPM but the gear box change is not good coming down the box.

Appreciate your reply

Show them @ the Service desk your letter from Skoda UK or CZ or was that a dealership as you said in another thread about Cambelts.

Go to an Automatic Gearbox Specialist if you are not going to trust the Main Dealers who tell you one thing.

They do change the Oil in DSG,s if people are prepared to pay,

well unless they have already messed up doing a simple job.

Maybe the policy has changed.

But you were told it was recommended.
