The best all round car you can buy?

Featured Replies

After a few months with the Superb have to say I'm convinced its the best all rounder you can buy...

It swallows all the stuff you could ever need (bought it because we have a newborn and needed the space and it more then covers this off), on my daily commute on my own it hums along the motorway wonderfully and the ACC and DSG just make it so easy. Then the other day when the motorway was a mess I had to come the 'back way' which is about 25 miles of twisty B roads, have to say I wasn't especially looking forward to it, thought it was going to be too big and I wouldn't be able to make my usual progress, but it just ate that up too and was more then capable round the corners and the odd overtake for the slow moving tractors...

Annoyingly the supplying dealer fit a set of budget tyres on it which annoyed me (it had done less then 10k when I got it so theres another car out there somewhere with the tyres from mine which are no doubt still in pretty good nick) but its going today to get some PS4's on it which I just think will make it even better...

Mine is on 26k and somebody (presumably dealer) has fitted budget tyres on the front while the back has Bridgestone potenzas. Luckily it is also having a full set of Michelin PS4 fitted tomorrow morning!

What version have you got? (Doesn’t say in your profile) This is my second superb (mk2 before) and you’re right they are very good cars and don’t feel at all too big (or too lazy if it’s the 280 4x4!)

Haven't had a chance to use the tyres properly yet, garage is a 2 minute drive away but will get a nice run to work tomorrow to start bedding them in at least. Went for the PS4S in the end, will probs go to the normal Ps4 when these are done but just needed to see what these are like at first.

Mine is the 190 TDI, spends majority of its life on the motorway so is the one for me. Had the same engine in a Leon before, feels miles quicker in the superb though but think that's just because of the DSG.

I have just changed my Octavia vRS with the 184 TDI for a Superb with the 190 TDI and blow me it’s much faster than the Octy!! No idea why and I didn’t see that coming at all. I love mine, it’s a bit of a shame in a way it won’t be used as much as the Octy so I won’t be taking as much advantage of the ACC and other toys as I would if I was still on my old commute but even with reduced mileage I enjoy the extra space and thought put into the design. A pay rise for whoever designed the little cargo dividers. Keep my bag upright in the boot so nothing falls out.

The 280 bhp version is strong contender for best bang-for-buck in my books with cars such as VW Arteon, Passat estate, Leon Cupra Estate, pretty much all have the EA888 engine and also Kia Stinger (more performance, less cargo / rear space). I definetly prefer the EA888 with its DSG boxes due to the easy tuning potential with a remap. The only problem the Superb has is very floaty suspension but a rather inexpensive sway bar upgrade fixed most of that.

How can it be faster than vrs? Its heavier for sure.

It might be the mapping I guess that makes it feel quicker then the 184 cars, either way though it either is or definitely feels quicker at least.

Had a run to work on the new tyres this morning and they have changed totally how the car feels, the front feels much more planted and heavier but in a very reassuring way. Much more confidence on the turn in too. But I guess that's what you get going to Michelin from 'RoadX' tyres!

As you have experienced S3 Superbs are great all round cars. S2's were pretty good too. I've had both & the the S3 is a country mile better quality.

I prefer the look & practicality of the estates & the 280 4 x 4 with a stage 1 engine re-map is a very quick sleeper. Barring an insurance write off I will be keeping mine for quite a while.

Talking of tyres, keep an eye on the wear on the inside of the rears. Last year & had to get a 4 wheel alignment done after the inside of my rear tyres went down to the canvas & I had a slow puncture as a result. The tread depth on the outside of the tyres was fine but the inside was zero indicating the rear camber was out of whack. Apparently it's quite a common problem on many VAG models that share this chassis. Other than that it's been fine.

Agreed.  My wife has had a Karoq 190 TDI since late 2019.  It replaced a Tiguan 184 TDI.  The Karoq is definitely quicker when I floor it.

However, having just checked, I see that the Karoq is 1.2 sec quicker to 62 mph but some of that is no doubt down to it weighing 170 kg less than the Tiguan.
