Parking Brake

Featured Replies

I have a 2020 Superb iV and am experience a slight issue with the parking break.

I park up on my driveway which is on a slight slope going backwards. When I switch the car on, release the parking break I then try and move the DSG stick form P to Drive, 50% of the time it moves smoothly out of P but the other 50% you have to give it a real tug to move it and you can feel it 'clunking' out.

Has anyone experienced this before? I was wondering if it was because I was putting it in P too early when I was parking up so I made sure the car was completely stationary before putting it into Park but it hasn't helped.

Sounds like whatever way you're parking  is letting the car roll onto the parking pawl, hence the clunk. It's not an issue in itself.

To test, when you park up, put the car in park and turn it off, then release the footbrake.

You should hear the handbrake wind on as soon as you turn the car off. This should ensure the handbrake does the holding rather than the park pawl, unless you have the auto hold turned off?

Typo

You should never have the car holding on the gearbox parking pawl on its own, without the handbrake being on.

When parking,  the handbrake should be applied before selecting park, and when setting off you should select drive before releasing the handbrake, or just use the autohold system.

The problem is that you're manually releasing the park brake while in Park.

The park brake will release automatically when you drive off, compensating for the gradient as needed, so you can just start up, select D and drive off whatever the gradient.

Similarly, when parking up all you need to do is select P and switch off.

It's a myth that holding the car on the parking pawl will damage it - that's what it's designed for!

I must admit the auto handbrake is a blessing and a curse. It's extremely convenient but when I drive my partner's car I inevitably forget to put the handbrake on and have a minor heart attack when I step out and the car rolls forward onto the parking pawl

The difference about Park, is selecting P on the flat or on a slope.

Apply the Parking Brake / E-Brake before selecting 'P' / Park, and do not leave a vehicle held by the Pawl on a slope.

It has been this way as long as there has been Auto boxes / DSG's etc.

Thanks everyone. I will make sure I put the handbrake on before selecting P.
