Unusual application for a VAG engine

Featured Replies

Yep, it's in my new Elise!!

Installation was done last year and the engine was custom mapped at Emerald Engineering in Watton, Norfolk to produce 260bhp and 280lb on their conservative rollers.

It is without a shadow of a doubt the fastest car I have ever driven.:D

Seen quite a few done now, very cool indeed.

I'm guessing it's a 1.8 20 Valve Turbo?

What was the donor car? And how did the conversion go?

Looks like it could be an AUB from an Audi A4 at a guess.

So far as I am aware, there is only one person doing these conversions and that is Bernard Scouse aka Auto-Tecknix (http://www.auto-teknix.co.uk/). More people are going for Honda's (n/a or supercharged) than VAG's at present.

This engine is from a TT complete with the 6 speed gearbox. You need the Seat Cupra R engine, or the more powerful TT or S3 as it has the bigger turbo.

Interestingly, I have a mate with the same engine in his Mk2 Golf Gti.

Ahh it was the A4 engine cover that threw me.

There was a chap on anoher forum with one, and I used to work next to a Elise specialist in Bicester who did the VTEC conversions.

What can I say, other than how jelous I am!!

Must be an awesome ride indeed

Get the IHI on there, yee haaaa

nice use of engine, buy far the best under 2.0 highly tuneable turbo engine around the good old VAG 1.8T.

I am impressed. How does the Lotus chassis react to lag and weight change? Scary ride?

Not sure the Japs would agree with you on that ;)

Chris

I bet that's quick!

Not sure if this is supposed to be public or not yet but I know James from JBS has just bought an Elise and intends to fit a 1.8T running around 300bhp with the plan being to offer this as a conversion to elise owners in the future.

It actually feels surprisingly controlled and there is precious little turbo lag. You need to uprate suspension and other components, but it makes for a pretty awesome car. Weight is only 40kgs more and the engine is sited lower in the car, so there is no real handling difference.

Good luck to anyone wishing to do the same engine transplant! I know that Bernard spent a lot of time and effort doing his conversion. He also offers 300bhp and more, but I can't think anyone really needs it. BHP/tonne on mine is 336!

Maybe 300bhp for customers but he mentioned around 450bhp for his Elise

Well, I know that sort of power has been achieved in Holland with a RS6 engine, but that was a much heavier lump in a lightweight car.

I expect cooling issues will arise in any turbocharged Elise with 450 bhp. Interesting proposition having nearly 600bhp / tonne, but I'd not even want to step in the thing in the wet. Mine is great in the dry, but it will spin the wheels in 5th gear in the wet!

To give you an idea of the performance of my 'tame 250bhp version', it'll do 0-100s in less than 10s, 40-100 in 4th in 6.8s and hit 160mph. I also datalogged 20-70mph in 4th at 7.5s!!

Just been out in my mate's brand new VX220 Turbo... He's running it in at the moment, so we didn't nail it, but I can certainly vouch for being a little worried in the wet, and that's with "only" 200bhp!

Plus I could hardly get in and out of it LOL (good job I'm on a diet!).

I reckon yours must be amazing in the dry, looking at your times! Bring on the Summer!!! :) :)

Yes, it has 45% more power to weight and 60% more torque to weight than the VXT!!
