Power Assisted Steering Failing

Featured Replies

A week ago I was driving the car (Skoda Fabia MK2 2008 1.4 Petrol BXW) and then stopped for a couple of minutes. When I turned the engine back on, the PAS light came on and there was no PAS. I drove it few minutes and then I stopped and re-started the engine; the PAS worked fine.

In the following days, the PAS worked now and then (once every 20 tries), but always worked on a cold start. All of a sudden, yesterday it stopped working even on a cold start and no matter how many times I try, it seems to be dead now.

I've hooked up my VAG and this is the result:

Address 01: DTCs cleared

I have tried clearing the DTCs with no success.

I have tried aligning the steering wheel (by locking it to the left and then to the right) and it only worked once although I think it was just a coincidence.

The battery is new (changed it myself in Jan 2021).

I have measured the batery and it's 13.98v when the engine is on.

I have checked the power steering fluid and topped it up.

I believe there is an issue with the wiring -- might have been cut or corroded. Another thing to mention is that I do have an issue with the sunroof and on heavy rains one of the rear tubes leaks inside the car -- the airbag cartridges on the rooftop were quite rusty when I took the top lining off.

Another thing I am going to try is to take out the connectors from the PAS pump and clean them.

Any ideas?

By no means an expert but the failure pattern sounds like when my PAS pump was on its way out (albeit on my mk2). It would generally work fine after a cold start but would fail soon after - everything else on the car ok. Found a decent quality replacement from local scrap and problem solved.

Could be the pump, as mentioned. They are part electric, part hydraulic so rely on two things to work, not just fluid. A second hand unit might solve the issue if you are able to install it, but be sure to get a warranty on it as saving money can cost a fortune!

EDIT: Just seen something that mentioned the plugs on these can suffer corrosion so have a look and clean up the electrical contacts before binning the pump.

Thanks both for your replies :). Much appreciated.

I have managed to disconnect the connectors; will get some contact cleaner, try to clean it and then report back.

@mrgf what do you mean get a warranty? You mean buying a new one? or just get an used one with warranty? A new one is about 300-500GBP :-S... Found a few used ones on ebay that cost 60-100GBP

Tried clearing the contacts & then cleared all DTCs and error still persists... So I'll just replace the pump.

Does anyone know if every line needs to match? Seems to be indentical to mine but it read TD5 ES instead of JB1 LINE 2 PL... does that line matter as well?

I have attached a picture of my pump (IMG_1468.jpg, i.e. the one fitted) and a picture of the pump I'm looking to buy (I'm keen on this one as the seller looks pretty reputable and it comes with a 12month warranty)

You have a "load signal" and "battery voltage" low being logged, maybe check that the load wire is still 100% okay at the plug<>socket underneath the car near the engine<>gearbox joining point.

Having a slightly low battery voltage will never help any gross users of 12V power like the steering pump motor.

Edit:- being able to communicate with the power steering controller would be handy, maybe that will return after you sort out whatever is causing the low battery supply voltage.

Thanks for your reply. I have cleared the DTCs and the Drive Voltage error didn't come up anymore. I've tested with the multimeter and it's 14.4v. I have also tested the plugs that go into the steering wheel pump and they do bring 14.4v. It's probably an older code (replaced battery couple of months ago).

Here's a more recent auto-scan.

I think you got what I meant about warranty, then. A trader will offer usually at least 30 days but often more. A private seller will sell without, probably, just say it is working and probably offer a refund if you find it does not but if it fails in a short space of time, unlucky!

I think I am correct in saying the fist line of code is the relevant part number. The rest might be batch codes, manufacture years/factory codes or other details that will help dealers find exact matches to parts for say, supply, manufacture faults, etc. Also, the same pumps are used by other VAG vehicles. I think I am also correct in saying the pump changed a little after 2009 and the later ones can be retro-fitted but they have less connectors so the spare plugs may have to be plugged up.
