6 speed auto or 7 speed info?

Featured Replies

i might buy a superb estate silver 150ps diesel, SE-L it has a 6 speed dsg, why is it not a 7 speed ?

Age; the DQ381 7 speed wet clutch didn’t come with all the diesels until MY2019.

its a 67 plate...30 dec 17

Would be a DQ250 6 speed. Mine was fab in the Octy but the DQ381 7 speed in my Superb is slightly quicker to shift and it has a taller final drive with the 7th ratio.

just done a bit of checking the dq250, dq381, and the dq500 all have  wet clutches and have to be serviced every 3 years or 38k-40k miles is this right?

The 40,000 miles is correct for the DQ250.   Not the 3 years.

Haldex servicing is every 3 years or sooner.  Not shown as how many miles.

thanks for that as far as you know is this dq250 gearbox a reliable dsg and is it nice and smooth.

I have this gearbox on a 220 TSi. It is generally smooth, but there's an occasional jerk if for example taking up drive after slowing to a roundabout but not stopping.

i have heard the vag dsg boxes do that, but are there any reliability issues with this unit.

I believe the 6 speed DQ250 has a better reputation for reliability than the 7 speed DQ200.

@DB72   That is not difficult though.

My DQ250 was solid and they are one of the best DSG’s, very reliable in my experience. We had 2 in the family both big milers, the Passat is still going strong with 170k miles on it, mine was great with 133k when sold.

Same remarks with a TDI190. But I'm used to it now and I don't pay much attention to this that much. It may happen sometimes, that's true.

Then GO! I used to have cars with manual gearbox for over 25 years. This DSG6 is my first 'automatic' gearbox and I would never go back to a manual one for my daily car, even though it has some inconveniences mentioned above.

Note: The gas pedal lag can be reduced using VCDS to make it little bit more reactive.

I would never have a manual daily and once you have a DSG, you’ll never have a normal slush box again, it’s uncanny!

Agree entirely. All my driving is urban city now, auto just makes it eeeeasyyy. Plus the step off and lack of delay / drama / hands off while getting into 2nd makes merging into roundabout gaps a doddle.

They're not perfect. But there is always the manual mode when you REALLY want to stay in 3rd on a motorway roundabout.

Once you have driven a DSG auto you won’t want to ever go back to a manual gearbox car.

I went with a manual gearbox because of concerns about reliability/possible expensive repair bill and reservations about tight space/uphill manoeuvring but wish I had got a dsg.

I can still justify a manual gearbox to myself because I don't do high mileage and most of my journeys are short but in the back of my mind I know the driving experience would be more pleasurable if I had a dsg, so much so that I am still thinking about trading in even though I will have taken a hit financially.  If I do trade in though I would still be leaning more towards the 6 speed wet clutch dsg.

If buying a newer car there is no reason to not be leaning towards a 7 speed wet clutch DSG.

Went from manual to DSG and will never go back I dont think (not on a car like the Superb anyway, on fun stuff there is definitely still a place for manual), it just makes things so effortless and easy. Have the 6 speed on mine and there were some times when it would take a bit of getting used to but now I am used to it am not sure how I would feel without it on the daily.

DSG+ACC is possibly the greatest invention ever if most of your driving is on the motorway

hi mate i test drove the new toyota corolla 2.0 and the new type cvt gearbox was absolutely brilliant at another level compared to anythink what comes out of the vag group

@DB72 The 1st reply by @SashaGrace said when the 7 speed wet clutch DSG became available in Mk3 Superbs.
