Superb MK2 Estate electric tailgate problem

Featured Replies

Is there a schematic online which shows and describes the functioning of the electric tailgate on Superb II estate? Mine started failing intermittantly and now has stopped working. I can hear a whiring noise, beeps and rear indicator lights flashing on when it tries to open. It just seems to clear the bottom catch, then I have to open it manually. It refuses to close by pressing the button on the tailgate bottom edge. Although, that tailgate button was illuminated and now it isn't, so if there was a fault on the button circuit could it be causing the tailgate to want to keep closed. I purchased a .pdf workshop manual online which said it covered "all marques" but it doesnt cover the estate. I'd appreciate any advice please.

BTW. This started happening after I had the panoramic roof leaking.....possible water issue?  I've cured the roof leak by taping over the joins with gaffer tape, but I'm not sure where the water leak managed to get to.

Try drying out the struts.  I propped the door open, removed the struts hung them upside down for a while and then sprayed contact cleaner inside them.  Been spot on since and I had exactly the same problem as you.

Thanks Stu, I'll give it a try.

You can also use my method - open struts and repair them, then you don’t have to deal with this issue ever again.

I've read on the forum that the electric struts can be replaced with gas struts. I'm assuming the gas struts don't open the tailgate as the electric struts do, in which case I have no problem now with lifting the gate manually, albeit it is heavy, I don't think my wife could do it. What's the advantage of gas struts?
