we have a skoda octavia hatchback 12 plate it,s a 1.6 engine and my hubby would like to know if he can swap the gearbox from a 2ltr into our car. anyone any ideas ?

Look at the build sticker in the boot or in the service manual. The transmission code is next the engine code. That will allow you to compare ratios with other codes.
