I have skoda fabia scout 2012 last few days my key sometimes only turns dashboard lights on the wont turn to start car up..ive been told it could be key issue or ignition barrell issue or steering lock issue

it could be an immobiliser problem dose the key spring back when you try to start it

Have you tried the spare key?

So get one made, it'll be cheap without a chip and if it isn't better you can at least have a spare to get you into the car if you lock your keys in the boot, if it is better you can pop the chip in it from your old key and keep that as your spare instead.

...Not sure that will help, if his key only works sometimes. It will turn on the ignition so accessories come on but not ignite the engine.

Ben, make sure your car's battery is fully charged as sometimes a flatfish one won't turn the engine but it has enough juice to look like the dash lights are all on and won't necessarily fade out the dash or click/whirr, etc. it just seems like the car won't start. Its a good starting point, anyway as Fabia's, as I have often mentioned, hate flat or weak batteries.

The ignition lock is getting stuck, read the post, if his key is very worn then a new one may fix it, in an ideal world he'd replace the lock barrel but it's a tricky DIY fix and expensive too.

I am with Sepulchrave on the spare key. You can get them cut to a photo on Ebay for £10 - I have one of these as the safety option should the common door wiring issue lock the keys inside, this won't start the car as there is no chip but will possibly turn the engine over if it is a key and not barrel issue - if this does actually turn the engine over putting your old key with the immobiliser chip close to the ignition barrel may allow starting . The keys appear to be cut with a cutter of a set width therefore it could be just wear making the track wider and causing issues. I assume that you have tried lubricating the barrel with Plusgas (my preferred option to WD40) or similar. The fact that it will turn to the 1st position suggests a good key, but I  am unsure what the 1st to 2nd key position interaction is.

my apple-ogees, Sep... I slightly mis-read and thought they meant it sometimes fired, sometimes didn't, not sometimes won't turn past accessory that point so as to fire up!

I would suggest then, trying to squirt some graphite spray/powder it to the barrel. There were issues many years ago, where barrels become difficult to turn (Had it myself) and needed lubing. I had a little graphite spray that did the trick but couldn't find it again. Subsequently, I found little puffer type squeezy bottles of graphite powder. It seems to be the best thing and is only a few quid so worth a try to see if it helps.

BTW, At the time, even my dealer did not know how to cure the issue!
