how to check mileage?

Featured Replies

hi all, A car i am looking at has done 14k since march 17, 4 mane dealer services but between march 2020 to feb 2021 it has done 650 miles, probably due to covid but how can this be checked without having the car to plug in to the computer.

Have you looked at the MOT history?

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

Thanks, AG Falco

yes done that but it just gives the current mileage ,but the service history gives the last 3-4 main services , the second to last one on march 2020 gives it as 14045, and the last one on feb 2021 is 14695, so can this be clocked in between mot,s

So you have 2 MOT dates with 650 miles between them

In theory any car could be clocked, but if first MOT was at 14,045 then looks like initial user did less than 5000 miles per year and it fell to 650 miles in lockdown year.  Unless it has been clocked twice doesn’t seem unbelievable

If there was annual services, do they show the mileages, and do they go up at about 4700 miles per year pre lockdown.  But why someone chose a diesel for 4700 miles per year is a mystery.

EDIT just checked the MOT checker, and worn and slightly perishing front tyres suggests they are the originals which is consistent with a 15k miles car

I would like to link the email i have of the service history but i dont no how to do it.

So the front tyres went from not advised to both advised on low tread in 651 miles!

What DOT code are ALL of the tyres?

Thanks, AG Falco

Do you have service dates and mileages at each ?

yes john i thought that about the tyres mate.

It looks like the car has only been serviced at Underwood in Colchester.

Now at 14839 Miles

Thanks, AG Falco.

Found this:- so may have be sold ( to the trade? ) in October 2020. I can check but only at work on Tuesday.

Date of last V5C (logbook) issued
15 October 2020

Last V5C issued October 2020. Perhaps a car that was doing a steady 4.5k per year pre covid, sat all summer before being chopped in and has sat on a forecourt / auction lot since?

If it's got the service history I wouldn't worry

yes i thought similar, 6 months during covid then sold and now on a dealer forecourt, the battery will be f%%%%ked

A new battery is only going to be about £150, not bad if the deal is good?

Interestingly we tried to buy a (very) cheap runaround after lockdown 1. The dealer was helpful, however he announced the battery was goosed and I'd need to add £100 to the asking price, or bring my own battery if i wanted to test drive it. A novel approach!

i think the AGM batteries are a bit more but i get your point, if there a half decent garage they will have put new tyres and anew battery on it.
