Cambelt and water pump replacement

Featured Replies

April 2021

Would someone please advise whether it is best to change the cambelt and water pump on a 64 plate Citigo GreenTech though the vehicle has only 25000 miles on the clock. We've had the car for 3 years now adding 14000 miles.

My wife uses it principally for short journeys around town at urban area speeds.

No evidence that cambelt has been changed before.

Thank you.

25k miles? Leave it alone for another 25k, but look at it on each service for wear or damage.

There is a FUD campaign going on in the UK to scare people into very early cambelt changes in order to generate revenue for dealers. It's basically a scam being spread largely  through social media, and UK dealers....

And if the water temp is fine, and the  waterpump sounds fine, and has no leaks, it is fine.

The water pump is on a different belt to the cam so there is no point in changing the water pump unless there is a problem with it.

VW recommend inspecting the PTFE reinforced cambelt at 160k miles and to change if necessary.

There is no specified time limit.

My 2016 Colours model has just passed 70k miles on the original belt without issues.
