Change steering wheel to something nicer... ?

Featured Replies

I want to change the steering wheel to someone with a nicer look.
Both the 3-spoke and the 4-spoke Original steering wheel look deplorably ugly and dull.
Any suggestions ?
Preferably with the new logo on.
( 6 speed manual gearbox. )

MK3 Style?

OK, here's the story...
My wife has been looking at a few different cars but she has decided on the Octavia SCOUT Mk-2 (2010-2013) 1Z
but she says that the steering wheel is so very ugly and wonders if it can be exchanged for something nicer.

Is this the RS steering wheel ?

  Yes this is much better according to her.

Is there a steering wheel from any Skoda model with a flat bottom that fits ?
Much nicer to get in and out of the car.

Exactly what parts are needed for the replacement ?
What needs to be connected and or coded ?
Is it plug-n-play ?
Is the steering wheel at the same distance from the driver as before the change ?

It's not a RS wheel, it's from a MK2 FL Superb or a FL Yeti if I remember correctly.

In short, you'll need:

- a steering wheel

- an airbag

- the wiring loom inside the steering wheel for the airbag

The only tricky part is the MFSW buttons. They need to be from a PQ35 based car such as the MK2 FL Superb or FL Yeti.

You can take the wheel from a MK3 Octavia/Superb, including the flat bottom versions but you'll need to replace the buttons as MQB buttons will not work in a MK2 Octavia. If you have a pre-FL MK2 Octavia, you might need a specific steering controller version but I'm not 100% sure.

It was plug and play, you might need to clear the airbag light and the distance may have changed slightly but I can't say I noticed much.

 Great to know that the steering wheel must be from an PQ35 based vehicle.

How to know which Skoda's are PQ35 based ?

( I think I read somewhere that the Skoda RAPID also is an PQ35 based vehicle. )

What does FL mean as you write in several places ?

 Sounds way too complicated to take the wheel of a MQB-based vehicles such as Octavia Mk-3

Skoda Rapid is PQ26 if I remember correctly. The only two PQ35 cars which got this style of wheel were the MK2 FL Superb and the FL Yeti :)

FL means facelift.

- The MK2 Superb was made from 2008-2015 but in 2013 it had a 'facelift' with new styling.

The Yeti was made from 2009-2017 and also had a 'facelift' in 2013.

It's not hard to use a MQB wheel but you will need to buy replacement buttons (and loom?) to get it working.

I'm sure someone makes a convertor but I don't know much about it...

One of these two steering wheels below is the one she wants in her car.
Which of them is easiest to adapt so that everything works together with the PQ35 platform ?

It was plug and play,  you might need to clear the airbag light.

So if the steering wheel below fits straight on ( Plug-N-Play ) and all the features are the same what needs to be done in detail to convert ?
Is the diameter of the Superb-2 FL steering wheel the same as the Octavia-2 FL steering wheel ?

  Since it appears that the YETI is also a PQ35 based car,
perhaps it's the best chance that the YETI steering wheel fits the Octavia-2 FL with as little modification as possible.........

  Or ?

  Are they ( Yeti FL <---> Octavia-2 FL ) also based on the same structure of the electrical systems ?
( electrical architecture )

A MK2 FL Octavia, MK2 FL Superb and FL Yeti are  very similar electronically.

The steering wheel from either the MK2 FL Superb or FL Yeti should be fine in a MK2 FL Octavia.

No idea about the diameter, it didn't feel noticeably larger or smaller to me.

 Ok, then it's decided that I'm going to try to convert a steering wheel from YETI FL to my wife's Octavia-2 FL.

....This is because YETI seems to be the closest relative to Octavia-2,  which should mean the least problems ( I hope )

 It would really be good/nice if you could explain in detail step by step what needs to be done and what needs to be obtained.
(
I have my own VCDS if something needs to be coded )

Retrofit flat bottom steering wheel on Octavia 2 FL vRS:
- steering wheel from Citigo
- buttons and airbag from Superb 2 FL
- control module for MSW
Superb 2 FL is the ultimate donor for Octavia 2. Everething works: backlight, buttons.
