Think i blew my car up

Featured Replies

Well, I suppose its bad news, but at least fairly fixable.

I'd be worried if the turbo let go in an explosive way as it could have sent bits of shrapnel right through the system and into the engine. Thankfully it looks like the engine died quickly enough before any internal damage was done. :)

Kris, sorry to hijack this thread, you mentioned that the dealer aranged the remap for you, I bought my first VRS from Dumfries, in the I got it Jabba'd,but im wondering who the dealer is using cos Jabba is a long way from Cumbria

Not sure but i heard they use someone known as "nick the chip" dont know what re-map it is tho.

It is running 181bhp according to the rolling road up at Star Performance.

We had a brand new diesel clio do that. Can't remember what it was in the end, but it wasn't really fooked, so you should be OK :)

EDIT: Note to self. Read page 2 before posting

I hope they make sure the intake is clear beofre starting it up then.

TBH i'm a little suprised if it hd broken that bad it hasnt injested some of the bits.

I hope not......

If this was me I'd be getting that map assesed by someone. It sounds like theres too much boost.....

Hopefully the intercooler was the last place any turbo shrapnel got in to.... How did the engine stop when it all happened? Did it feel like it got choked? Its just I thought if a turbo merely died, it wouldn't stop the engine.... The only thing that I thought would stop the engine without killing the ignition would be if bits of turbo got in to the engine itself.

I sure hope that hasn't happened in this case.

I'm sure Skoda will be watching out for the warranty claim on this one.

Could be interesting if they refuse to pay the dealer for the work.

Will the dealer be prepared to cover the cost?

I cant see Skoda paying up myself.

Dealer says the warranty is covering it, just hope they dont change their mind..

As Lummox said , Skoda won't pay for warranty claims on modified parts and a remapped engine that blew up will certainly come under that heading.

The dealer will be relying on Skoda not knowing that the car isn't standard any more but it's pretty common knowledge that they read this site. They don't have many cars blowing up so it won't take them too long to look at where you live and match that to a claim from the local dealer.

The dealer will then have to either cover the cost themselves or get you to pay for it.

Irrespective of what the dealer told you , the manufacturers warranty *is* invalidated by the remap. Do you have anything from the dealer in writing about the remap and warranty as you may find them suddenly getting rather evasive

In light of recent SUK pronouncements and no matter how much I wanted to alert my friends to potential problems regarding our cars, I think I would be keeping mum about any warranty issues my car might have.

I certainly wouldn't be posting pictures of the dealers courtesy car, my friend, you may as well phone Skoda direct and confess all, because at the moment you've just had "catch me" tatooed on your forehead. And you did it yourself!

The warranty from SUK would be invalid but IF you have it in writing by the dealer that you purchased the goods from them with the remap the dealership imho should pick up the cost regardless. Can't blame SUK for voiding the warranty on the engine in this case, it's not an officially approved tweak, unlike in some other countries where you can buy a mapped car with full warranty.
