Upgrade to spare wheel

Featured Replies

I have a 2017 Superb with 18" wheels fitted with 235/45 R18 tyres. I want to replace the puncture repair kit with a spare wheel and tool kit. I'm a bit confused as to whether I need a 16" or 18" wheel. I assume the 16" spare comes with a 205/55 16 tyre and the 18" spare with 205/50 18 tyre. According to my calculations both of those give close to the rolling circumference of the original tyres. So does it matter which I go for or am I totally barking up the wrong tree!?
Thanks

Depends on what engine you have (therefore the size of the brakes)

The 2.0 petrol engines need a minimum of 17" wheels to clear the brakes, whereas the 2.0 TDi can run 16".

A 205/50/18" would be closer circumferance than the 205/55/16" to your current 235/45/18", however I thought all the 18" spare wheels were the really skinny 125/70/18"???

2.0 TSI Petrol engine so looks like it will be the 18". You're probably right about the tire size as I was only guessing! 125 is certainly narrow!

Cheers

The 220TSi spare wheel is a 16" one - at least it is on mine and I have used it!

So it looks like the 16" will fit over the brakes. I assume the tyre size on your spare is 205/55? According to my calcs there is only 1% variance between the circumference of that size and the road wheels. But then I did fail O level maths twice!

The 280/272 engine has bigger brakes, hence they require a 17" spare to clear the brakes.

All the others can have a 16" spare.

size of disk is less important than size of tire

16" can be installed even on 280/272 version, just install it on correct place - rear axle

stock size of spare wheel's rubber is lot smaller than normal tire and that disables usage of cruise control

replaced stock 205/55r16 by full diameter 205/65r16
weren't easy put it in cause back side plastic

diameter comparison to 215/55r17 and 225/55r17:
205/55r16 _ -5.3% _ -6.7%, this huge size difference cancels usage of cruise control
205/65r16 _ +0.8% _ -0.7%, not tested yet

there is no space for 215 mm width under floor cover, but is enough room for full diameter tire

i have replaced to 205/65r16 (not tested on the road yet)

because stock 205/55r16 disables Cruise Control (were installed on rear axle)

Thanks all for the input. Just going off to Ebay to see what I can find in the way of 16". If there is an 18" wheel on there can I still fit one of those as an alternative or stick to 16"?

Cheers.

Still confused! Just rang Hortons Skoda with a view to getting a new wheel and kit and they say I need an 18" spare ! Tyre and kit £220 inc VAT.

Yes, that's the tyre size and there's 1 50mph warning sign on the wheel

Hi Paddy

Are you going 18" then?

What benefit has 18"?

Hi Roland the wheels on mine are 17" mate, I don't need a new one its just incase i get a flat in a place where i can change without waiting for the RAC, So i then can drive my local tyre fitters the next day, I don't do big mileages so a used one will do me just fine.

Ok. Same as you I don't do much mileage these days but I'd much prefer to have a spacesaver than using the foam. Although I'd rather not be using either on a motorway hard shoulder! Only ever changed a wheel there once. It was offside and very scary. Even worse these days where the left lane is also the hard shoulder. Crazy idea that's going to cost lives.

I had a blowout  at 70 in a hilux invincible on the m6 when i used to work, sh%%%t myself and it was so loud but me and my apprentice changed it on the hard shoulder very scary indeed, my car which i have only had a week only has a can of glue stuff and a mini compressor which is not worth a blow of a ragman's bugle.

Me too have used to stock 205/55r16 spare wheel just for ~80km,

mounted on two line higway ~20 min PM

And as i wrote above, that ~80km without Cruise Control were enough big motivation to replace rubber by 205/65r16

I don't think there will be a lot alternative tire sizes for 18" disk

I'm not sure if there is a benefit over the 16" spacesaver. However, having spoken to Hortons Skoda today they were adamant that an 18" wheel and kit was what I needed. Also looking at the Caffyns website the categorically say the 16" fitting kit is not for cars with 18" or 19" wheels. It says

Restrictions: Not suitable for vehicles with 2,0l TSI/ 206 kW engine or models with 18 or 19″ Alloys

Possibly an 18" spare is the current recommended kit? In the meantime I've ordered a 16" spare which, according to guys on here should fit and if it does then I'll worry about getting the related kit. Only had the car 3 weeks so not exactly a Skoda expert yet!

No one makes a 205/50R18 tyre size. You might be thinking of 205/50R17 which has a similar outside diameter to 205/55R16.

However, both these tyre sizes are too small for the Superb MK3.

Someone was saying that a 215/60R16 was just slightly too wide to fit flush in the spare wheel well, and that 205/65R16 fitted.

Maybe try a 195/65R16 92V fitted to a Superb MK1 6Jx16 ET40 steel rim.

It's got to be better than using one of those skinny space savers.

Yes you're right there don't seem to be any 205/50R 18 tyres!  I think the 205 width is the most you can get in the well. I've established that the 16" spacesaver comes with 205/55 R16 tyre and the 18" with the skinny 125/70 R18.

As I said before - the 280/272 (206kW) engine has bigger 340mm brakes which the 16" rim will NOT clear it.

If u've got a 280, then get a 17 or 18" spare.

Or if u want cheaper, get a 16",  but u'll b able to use it on the rear.

The 2.0L 220 (162kW) engine has 312mm brakes, hence the 16" rim is fine, front or back.

I don't know wat size the TDi versions have.

Yes I saw that thanks but my car is 220 BHP so front brakes shouldn't be an issue.  312mm discs I think. I'm going to try a 16" spacesaver first to see if that fits as it puts a bit more rubber on the road  than the skinny 18".

It looks like the Octavia MK3 6.5Jx16 ET46 rim with 205/55R16 is being sold as a spare for the Superb MK3.

Superb MK3 tyres such as 215/60R15 have an outside diameter about 5% bigger than 205/55R16.

However, 205/55R16 is a cheap tyre size (it's Europe's most popular car tyre size).

For the Superb MK3, I would choose the Superb MK3's 6.5x16 ET41 rim size over the Octavia MK3's 6.5Jx16 ET46 rim size, even if I fitted a cheap 205/55R16 to use as a spare.

That's useful info thanks. I'm going to try the 205/55 R16 route.
