Briefly losing power

Featured Replies

Think I've got a fuel, fuel pump or fuel filter issue as 2 days now I've had a brief loss or lack of power for a couple of seconds .

I've taken it for a blast and was fine ish until I turned of main road where it did it again.

Anybody got any ideas ? No lights on or come on when it happens .

It's only happened since I've put more morrisons fuel in 5 days ago

That may be your problem...

Will find out soon enough but never had a problem with it till now and have been using it for years.

Cars serviced last August so am stumped unless I've got a loose connection also

Gave it a wee bit of stick ,

Acceleration seems fine but when I hit a right hand bend it lost power and just as I was 100yrds from house I had to turn right it lost power again . No warning lights came on .

Any ideas

If it’s the original pump it’s possible that it’s in it’s way out and not uncommon. A spare can be had for £50 and easy enough to swap out. I would also check the whole assembly to while it out making everything is secure.

Yeah think it's the pump , in a straight line I've got power, soon as I hit a right hander I have no power

And have to hit the accelerator to the floor to get going.

Might have to sell the auld girl to an enthusiast

Well maybe.

Is the issue there when you're turning on steady throttle, or more when you do brake, turn in and then try to pick the throttle up again? I had the second one, and it was due to wear in the throttle pedal potentiometer.

Normal throttle on right hand band . I've had to stab the peddle to get a response.

Mechanic has changed pump and problem still there , I suggested the swirl pot and he said he could check it .

Probably wrong here, but it's not oil starvation is it while going around the corner, which could mean the pickup is partially blocked?

No lights come on and I've already had the sump pick up pipe cleaned although it was a few years ago

And I've only done 32,000 miles in 9years since owning car

Yeah yeah but how many miles has the car done since new, and how regularly did previous keepers service it?

  • Author

Cars done 150,000 and was going strong . Only things left to check are fpr,  and fuel tank / fuel , ( fuel filter and injectors but these wouldn't cause car to lose power on a right hand bend )

Check that the suppy and return pipes have not been reversed on the fuel sender/pick up asssembly, its very easy to do and can cause some very weird problems as the fuel pump has to suck really hard to overcome a non return valve.

I can't speculate why that would affect the vehicle on RH bends but definitely worth checking, also remove the sender and clean the filter guaze & check the roll over check valve while you are at it.

New swirlpot and throttle body and now doing it in a straight line a little but apparently clear on the bends. Guy seems to think it's fuel now as pump , filter , swirlpot and throttle body all changed

  • Author

Now does in a straight line , pulled away from garage and was stuttering . Could it be injectors or coil packs breaking down ?

  • Administrators

Coilpack would put it straight into limp mode and mode likely run on 3 cyclinders. For the year and Mileage, it really wouldn't hurt replacing it so you can rule it out.

Could it also be the injectors ?

If cleaned / replaced do they need to be programed like certain other brands ?

If I can't fix it then cars for sale , another £282 spent on fuel pump, throttle body / swirlpot and fuel filter plus labour

Does  the potentiometer on the throttlebody come with it ?

Having to keep stabbing accelerator peddle just to keep it moving . Car doesn't stall when tryin to drive .

Has to be fuel or injectors but I ain't a mechanic

What about sensors?

Why are you spending £282 on a fuel pump when you can pick up an oem or uprated ones for £50?

It might be worth going to your local garage (that you trust) to let them look over it.

Done that and he still can't find out why its doing what it's doing

Any faults logged?

Stage left suggestion - brake light switch. Common fail and if dicky and operating under some circumstances (ie a corner, sticking after braking etc) then the engine management will cut the power. Doesn't cost much and easy to change - so might be worth doing anyway. Does it have cruise control and is that playing up as well?

This failed on my mkI a few years ago - just a thought.

On the original post "I've taken it for a blast and was fine ish until I turned of main road where it did it again" - am guessing you had used the brakes turning off the main road - sticking switch?.

Dean pump cost £54 , filter cost £6.75, and throttle body cost £78 .

Not breaking the bank but with labour it put price up to £282

I did have a bulb out and think it was the brake light , but that was changed and had been fine .

Can have a look at the lights again and see if there's any bulbs out or flickering

Either way wifes said time for another car so this one's going 😔

I'm not a mechanic but we have guides on here to help you do that at home. Always worth having a go, to save money. Best of luck with it all. :)
