Octavia seems to be burning oil Mk3 vRS TDI

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Just wanted opinions really.

my mk3 vrs seems to be burning way more oil that I think it should. Car had a service and MOT at the end of feb all came back fine. Then it had the cam belt and water pump done in the middle of March. Since the service I’ve done around 750 miles and the dipstick now shows minimum oil when I checked it today. I checked it a few days after the service and it was at max. No warning lights or errors have ever shown and last year I felt like it was doing the same. I will admit I do short journeys for a diesel in towns mainly but I need it for towing. COVID stopped that last year hence the short journeys. Just seems way too much for a car that’s done 51k miles.

From what I’ve read here it could be inside the engine itself that’s the problem. I assume it wouldn’t be covered under the extended warranty if that was the case? Many thanks.

Welcome.  If you do some research on Briskoda, you will find many threads about oil burning on the TDI engines.  IMHO - it is down to the way the cars were bedded in from new....some burn more than others.  For example, my 2019 TDI 184 Scout burns about 100-150ml per 2000 miles - which is nothing.  Others will burn nothing, other cars will burn lots.  I know that @e-Roottoot is the expert in regards to oil burning issues, so I'll bring him in at this point.

Be sure the oil is at the top of the cross hatch so area A as in diagrams and that is at operating temp. Not WARM.  Up at 90 degrees C indicated.   ?How is the checking being done now? ,  cold dips or at NORMAL operating temperature?    The important thing is when picking up a car from a garage is dip the oil with the oil cold and the engine not started and know there is enough oil and where it is cold.  Then when you get home check the oil at normal operating temp on the flat after a few minutes and see where that is.   Then from that time you can check if the engine uses excessive amounts of oil.   If there is not enough in to start with after leaving the garage how can you possibly know.       What to watch for is high oil levels that is from diesel in the oil and that can be burned off leaving a low oil level.

Hey, thanks for the reply. When I checked it from the garage it will have been cold as I was at work for some hours while the car cooled. Wouldn’t have have been cold but warm when I checked it yesterday. Defiantly not operating temperature though.
