Tyre rotation

I note the mounting side of each tyre and at each tyre season change I interchange the front with the rear. In this way, I think they will be worn evenly. And when they are done, I replace them all.

Same here. I stick a label inside each wheel saying which corner of the car it came off from and use that as a guide to sort out the wheels when refitted next change time

I agreed with this for years, but was put right by an Advanced driving instructor.  Can’t remember the reason, but it made sense at the time!

who says he was “right”?

and how did he define “an average driver”?

And this from the Uniroyal site sums it up -

"The rear axle ensures the tracking stability of a vehicle."

Surely this thread has run it's course.  The advice from all tyre manufacturers is unanimous.....

The thread is now only interesting to see some peoples reluctance to understand the reason......

This topic has been ongoing on every car webste I've been a member of for the last 20+ years, so it isn't going to stop anytime soon.

IMHO we all have a higher opinion of our driving ability than truth, plus how many have had skid pan training and have first hand experience of controlling loss of rear end grip (very few).

First hand experience will always outshine internet opinion :)

Take the advice of the experts.

Think about it, if you are in a skid situation accident and are found to have your new tyres at the front and worn tyres at the rear contrary to industry advice. will the courts or police take your opinion over the trade view.

They will not be concerned with anyones opinion, your scenario would not exist other than in your imagination.

I've had skid pan training, 4wd training and pursuit training. Either way I wouldn't call myself an expert at all.

Simple rule with directional tyres is they must "roll" in the correct direction. Asymmetrical tyres again are similar but have a slight more give/take.

In the end let a professional tyre store rotate your tyres and leave it at that.

The courts will believe an expert over the police, the only exception being when a police officer is also a qualified mechanic by trade.

Double whamy

Well, I have had a police officer tell me that oversteer had been caused by front tyres more worn than rears! (BTW the oversteer did happen, which is why I'm less than convinced by "better tyres on the rear".)

Road condition (including oil on a wet road) are other things that affect multiple things. Not knowing the exact circumstances nor visiting the scene, ill leave my comment at that.

I doubt if there will be any (legal) argument unless any tyre tread is below the legal minimum.

Anything else is speculation.

ps - I used to sometimes label each winter/summer wheel with where it was used, but decided that it’s just as easy to eyeball the 4 loose wheels, assess the 4 tread patterns and fit them on front and rear as needed.

My winter wheels have just come off - each one is clearly marked with its location! My local tyre supplier http://www.jefffowkes.co.uk does this for me, and has done for many years.

Although a simple job to swap wheels over, its reassuring to have a competent mechanic check and report anything untoward.

Half an hours labour seems a fair price to save doing it myself.
