1.6 FSI Sale Advice

Featured Replies

Not sure where to post this but looking for a bit of advice.

My car was written off in January 2019 due to being uneconomical to repair after somebody drove into me.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, axle checked, bodywork repaired, mot'd and taxed as usual but just over two years later, we have decided to lease a kamiq and want to get rid of my octavia which I have owned since new in August 2006.

I have never sold on a car and with it being written off, I have no idea the best way to go about it and the fact I know its not worth much now, am I best going down the scrap route?

Thanks for any advice.

Scrapping will get you scrap value, so £120-£150.  Its the easiest and quickest option, with no consequences or guilty conscience over your head and car gone within a few hours.

Depends on the level of damage, someone may wish to take a punt on it and repair if its just panel and lamps damage.
If you do try to sell it, then make it crystal clear in the advert that is a category (insert level) write off and is sold strictly as breaking and not roadworthy and should not be driven away etc. You really do need to cover yourself here.

The 3rd option if you've got the time and space, is offer the car up as breaking, sell off all the bits people want, then scrap the rolling remains.

Thanks daz.

The car was repaired and apart from needing new break pads/discs at some point, still drives really well.

It's mot'd until March 22 and has been serviced every year since I purchased it but we have just decided to lease a new car going forward.

Cheers for the advice though, some things to think about.

As I understand it the obligation to report a vehicle's accident/repair history for a private sale is a moral rather than a legal one, so it's up to you whether you advertise it with history or just sell it "as seen" as a vehicle now surplus to requirements.

Again as I understand the issue of liability only applies if you misdescribe the vehicle at sale.

If i was to go down the private selling route, I would definitely advise what happened to it.

Have all the paperwork to show it was repaired and structurally sound.

In this case I'd not be scrapping. Certainly sell it. Anything with an mot is always worth £500, even for a shed of a car.

If yours is respectable and presentable with average miles etc and if the damage wasn't huge, I'd find someone selling a similar vehicle, and take 1/3rd to 1/2 off the price to allow for for the category status.

So it's a one owner car, FSH, not many 15 year old cars can compete with that.

I'd put it on eBay Auction, state it's been a repaired write off, as well as all the good bits.

I think you will sell it with no trouble at all.

It will be gone at the end of the auction for a fair price.

Get Freedom Light on Briskoda Forum and advertise the car there.

As mentioned, freedom members can advertise cars for sale on the forum.

Should you be interested the subscriptions details can be found here https://www.briskoda.net/forums/subscriptions/

From a more general point of view, I would say don't scrap it as if it's safe and runs with an MOT it has a value, particularly at the moment.

Private sale yes I'd definately declare it, but probably take off 25%-30% off the price of a similar car.

If it was one of the big car buying sites, it's up to them to do their homework as they will deduct for every little dent.
If they don't ask, I wouldn't volunteer the information as it's all on the records they can see. Obviously if they do ask it's different.

The route that's best for you will likely depending on wether you just want a simple quick sale or the best price.

You might be surprised by the demand for cheap simple run around cars at the moment, due to people avoiding public transport.

Cheers guys for all the info and advice.

The car isn't perfect bodywork wise, a little bit of rust appearing and the alloys are looking horrible but again, nothing that's going to stop the car running at all.

Even the guy who does my servicing says that it's been well looked after.

Will have a look over the weekend.

Cheers again.

If I was in your position I’d be advertising the car for sale

in local shop windows

for sale sign in car window

facebook

gumtree

word of mouth

in the first instance

every day some unfortunates have an accident or car failure those people still need to get to work etc etc hence they’ll need a local car in a hurry ( if you haven’t advertised yours they ain’t going to know it’s available

price ?

64000 $ question honest answer “ what the buyers prepared to pay “ ! sounds daft, not at all if they’re looking they’ll have a budget so a car has got to fall within their price band yet be competitively priced ( haven’t done any research myself but I can’t see it being worth a fortune so the fact it’s had an insurance repair recorded isn’t going to hugely affect the price, declare it if asked but I guess 70% of cars for sale have had a repair or paint at some point )

How to price it ?

compare like for like ( ish ) in autotrader eBay get a quote from webuyandcar etc  ( remember prices differ from location to location and certainly on the condition of the ( a good clean up in and out can add £100s to a car ( indeed many traders make a living flipping cars with just a days detailing work )

best advice be realistic with you asking price  ( would you pay THAT for it ? ) don’t try to be Arther Daley or Dellboy it don’t work unless it’s on the telly, don’t be frightened to say no to an unacceptable ‘ offer ‘ put it up for sale at the beginning of a month ( if possible ) you have already lost that months car tax refund ! and don’t leave to the last minute to sell ( better to have to organise a lift or accept you may need a taxi for essential journeys that have two cars that require insurance )

PS I’m not a car salesman or a trader if just bought and sold more cars than average and you learn as you go
