Electric windows not recocnised

Featured Replies

I've had an issue with my electric windows not working for over a week now.

On obdeleven it's showing as the buttons aren't installed, could this be a coding issue, or a faulty switch.

Also does the main window motor control the system, so if that gets faulty the whole window system stops.

The window motor modules on your car are connected to each other by LIN bus (a cheaper, simpler alternative to CAN). They don't, as far as I can see, have any data/comms connection to the rest of the car's systems, including diagnostic interfaces. So they're not the easiest things to fault find, and are invisible to VCDS and code readers, I believe.

Has the battery gone flat or been disconnected recently, prior to the trouble starting? There's a line or two in the owner's handbook about a reset procedure involving turning key in door lock stuff.

The driver's door module is the LIN master, the others slaves.

2 or 4 electric windows in the car?

It's just the front two are electric (I think I'd prefer manual windows all around)

That makes sense about the Lin bus, I noticed they was a circuit board in the motor when I was checking all the connections. It's starting to look more likely it could be the driver side motor, I've seen one with the same part number on a VW breakers site for £50 which is quite cheap from what I've seen on eBay.

When I reset the battery it will work for a short while and then crash and both windows will be non responsive with no attempting noise.

It happened when my battery died one morning, it had been going for a few days and I replaced it on the same day it went.

Could the drivers switch have a similar problem where it could crash both sides if it's faulty, or is it likely to just be the motor.

Thanks

Read and try the reset procedure in the handbook, it may be all you need to do.

Yeah I'll have a look in there and try it in the morning :) thanks

Please let us know if it works, or doesn't.

I've just looked in the manual and it shows how to reset it, but only to reset where you hold it for 3 seconds when it's closed to use the one button close, but mine are completely dead, there's no sound of the motor trying to work :s

Maybe you've got a different version of the handbook to the one I'm looking at, is there not a section on page 48 with heading "Operational Faults", or is that what you're looking at?

Do the windows currently do anything via key in door twist and hold? If not; disconnect the battery for a few minutes then try after reconnection. I think it's more of a reset than just restoring one-touch operation, when done via key rather than buttons inside.

It's a bit weird as written, because it doesn't seem to make sense unless the windows are currently open, maybe a bit 'lost in translation'.

Have a play around. Maybe if the windows do work briefly from the buttons after battery reconnection, open them fully, then try this key in door stuff from there?

Never had to do it on our '05 mk1 TBH, which has the same technology window motors, and that's had many battery disconnects. Not sure if our manual has that section.

@xman has posted about having to do this occasionally on a mk2 Fabia, I think. Maybe he can clarify. Or search his posts for the word reset.

If that doesn't help, another thing to check is wiring in the door bellows, driver's door to A-pillar (and the other side if it gets used regularly). It's a crap design on the mk2 so it could easily be that a wire or more is broken within there.

I think I did, I had my manual downloaded as pdf, but I've got my actual manual out and it shows about the key indoor method and said about the windows being down :s

after I disconnected the battery i was able to use the passenger window so I used the key method with that window down and nothing happened.

After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery the passenger side works but when I try it with the driver door switch it just crashes both sides.

So I I think I'll try that and check all the wires, there was a few where the insulation had split so I've taped around them at moment, but I think I might take the whole loom out and unwind the tape and have a proper inspection on them and solder or replace any wires that look faulty.

and yeah I agree it's not the best design lol

Check fuse 11 too.

All the fuses were fine and all the cables were fine, just a couple that the insulation had split that I taped up, but not the same coloured wires for the window.

I read people saying about a faulty switch but I couldn't see it being that, but I seen some for £8 on eBay so I thought take a gamble just in case and if not then I've got a spare, and it's worked :s

I don't know how, the original switch was immaculate and no corrosion on the circuit, so I don't know if something had failed on it and it kept crashing the module :s

But problem solved

Thanks for your help :)
