DRL's on a trailer

Featured Replies

Is there a VCDS mod to allow the trailer lights to come on as DRL's?

I know I can just turn the sidelights on to get trailer lights but I just wondered.

It would be handy to have rear DRL's on the trailer with the rear DRL's on the car not illuminated.

How about if the car had the rear DRL's on by default? Wouldn't that cause the trailer to also light up?

I'm not too sure that having trailer lights on without the car's lights would be a good idea.

DRL's what?

More seriously, I think it would be illegal to have trailer lights on without at least towing vehicle sidelights.

Rear Daylight Running Lights? I thought they were just on the front?

As you said just turn your lights on.

There is a coding mod to the Leuchte sets in the BCM that enables the rear sidelights to come on at the same time as the front DRLs.

As @PetrolDave has confirmed, it is possible to enable the rear DRL's to be on alongside the front ones.

That is preferential to 'just turning the lights on' because:-

  • It's automatic.
  • DRL's (front anyway) are brighter than sidelights.

All a bit silly really as Day Time / daylight running lights are so that people including those not driving cars but walking / cycling can see a vehicle coming even when Sunny.   Oddly even when stopped / parked they are on if the engine is.    So if you want to light the rear of a vehicle then maybe the visibility is bad.  So maybe get on the sidelights and dipped beam and rear reg plate  lights, and trailer marker lights to the front so you can be seen from the front and rear.   When you are reversing the reverse light should be on regardless of f the lights the driver chooses.    It is not that difficult really, just all rather odd with DRL,s then Auto lights and those that have no idea what others can see.

So we have "rear sidelights" and "rear daylight running lights", are they not both simply the rear tail lights?

Or are there seperate bulbs for these functions?

I agree with Root whatever he is calling himself now, if you really feel the need for them then the lack of visibility would dictate that you turn on your headlights.

As for disabling the vehicle rear lights when towing that is a daft idea, even brake lights dont dazzle & you would normally be looking forward when braking anyway, the high intensity rear fog light is disabled for good reason but sadly many trailers will not be equipped with one so even that can be a bad thing.

Yes they are at the rear:thumbup:

As a caveat though.......

I suppose there may be different front lights on different models - some led and some bulbs?

What we need is a MK3 owner to add some info!

I never mentioned this.

I have enabled rear DRL's with VCDS.

@john999boy  & @PetrolDave The caravan ignores the DRL setting.

I would just like the caravan tail lights to come on if the cars DRL's are on.

Not sure if it's possible. It's down to the trailer module to decide if the lights should be on...

Maybe have a look at it's coding and adaptation channels.
