Would you sell the car you love and why not?

Featured Replies

Ok so today I've been told that in order to end my financial struggles, I should sell one of my 2 cars. The person in question could not understand how it is possible to keep 2 cars and I should be grateful for the good advice 😂

Personally I find keeping a car cheaper than keeping some pets, and the 2 old bangers I drive put a smile on my face when everything else fails!

Just venting.

I don't know the situation you are in but people have tried to persuade me to sell my '95 MX-5 a few times for various reasons (kids / not used etc.) But no one has succeeded yet and they won't.

A remapped diesel to fly about the country (to work that is 😂)

And an old track car. Both stunning when washed. Good condition. Fast. Loved. Both needed 😂😂

Sadly this is my current dilemma. Got a Ford Capri with a 2.9 Cosworth conversion, it was/is my first car and I've had it since 2007!

But, sadly, I've not had any time to use it, and the council garage it is in is NOT water-tight. With it having been restored 3 years ago I can't bare to see it all go to waste rotting in a damp garage, so it's going to have to go:sadsmile: I dont want to, but it would kill 2 birds in one stone, if not 3. Whilst I'm 'detached' from the car a bit more emotionally as I haven't driven it during lockdown I think its best it goes quick. So if anyone wants a 220bhp Capri valued at over £20k on the insurance......its up for £16.5k:o (oh, and thats car no.3! Also have a caddy van and a mk2 MX-5, which will also be going this year)

I'd say sell the Clio before it rusts to death! ;)

Noo...  There must be somewhere dry you can store the Capri!  You could have used my garage if my MX-5 wasn't in it!!

Hmmm...   Wonder if I know anyone with an empty garage...

I don't know your exact financial situation, but it depends on the person.

If it's some know-it-all interfering busybody (mother-in-law, perhaps?) then either point out that the cars won't sell for much anyway, due to being a niche interest item, or just tell them to **** off.

Financial advisors will obviously suggest things like liquidating any assets you have, but really it comes down to which you prefer - Having a nice car, or being able to eat.

I have sold many cars that I was particularly fond of in order to relieve a separate, urgent, financial burden - these days it would depend on what they are..

I've also sold a few because the running costs were unjustifiable...

But nobody would pressure me into it.

I'd get a cover on the Capri.

Oof! That Capri sounds like an appreciating treasure. What a dilemma!

It'd be great if you had friends or family who could give you somewhere safe to keep the Capri, assuming you don't need the cash sharpish.

I had to bail out a mate who's garage got broken into in a attempted burglary to nick his beloved motorbike.

He was very paranoid and I offered to store it in my garage for a couple of weeks while he improved security at home.

The couple of weeks turned into about 3 months, but I was happy to help at the time.

In the end it's a car not a person. Maybe I'm lucky that I've never really felt all that attached to cars or houses. or objects in general

The next car is always more interesting to me.

  • 4 weeks later...

Had to sell the Audi RS4 that I owned from new and loved in 2006 when I retired in 2016, I'd wanted a real V8 ever since I was a nipper so it was a real struggle.

Why did I have to sell? Couldn't afford the running and maintenance (tyres and servicing) costs on the meagre pension I was on then.

Only really loved one other car I've owned - a Brodie Brittan Racing tweaked Renault 5GT Turbo which weighed less than an empty baked bean can but with 180bhp (when tweaked) it challenged (brown stuff) falling off a shovel!

Current distorted used car valuations due to electronic component shortages worldwide. time to sell or sit tight?

Depends - if you still need a car are you going to be paying over the odds for one for the same reasons used car prices are high...   personally it's hype and I only buy cars when I need to (I don't buy into the 'need a new car every three years on PCP' state of mind) so it doesn't really figure in my thoughts...
