Uncomfortable drive - Karoq

Featured Replies

I havent done many miles in my new Karoq, 800 miles after 6 months, but I still cant get comfortable.

I have sorted the foot/pedal problem I had by following advice from here, packing the floor mat upwards and adding an extra rubber on the accelerator pedal.

But its my left arm, hand now. I naturally want to rest my elbow on the top of the door card, but the shape of the Karoq one makes it slip off. There is a variable sweep to the top surface (CAD engineer speak) so it starts of flat then twists.

I try to use the the armrest, but its just not right. I feel I am twisting about nothing but it becomes worse the longer the drive, it is spoiling the car for me.

Engine wise its great.

I hope to get used to it eventually with a bit more driving time. I have been spoilt in my previous Volvo, that seemed to fit like a glove.

Using clock numbers what position are you resting your hands on the wheel?

10 o'clock and 2 o'clock are what is normally taught.

I used to do that when I sat my driving test 39 years ago today, but have migrated to left hand about 8 oclock, and right hand at about 2 oclock.

I had an accessory arm rest with one car I think it came from either Amazon or e-bay

That's a shame ianbenny, there's a lot of adjustments you could make that should get you comfortable so hopefully you will get there soon. I've done 900 miles in my first month which included a 300 mile road trip in week one which allowed me to find a good driving position eventually. I guess it all depends on your height and build, I'm 6ft and lanky with fairly long chimpy arms but I do need the armrest raised to its highest position and can rest my other arm on the door handle bit.

How can you do that, unless you sit twisted, one shoulder would be higher than other.  I assume you don’t do something daft like put fat wallet in back pocket so bum isn’t flat.

Always remember to get your legs and lower back comfortable by adjusting seat base first, only when that bit is correct do you start moving seat back and steering wheel to get optimum angles for shoulders and elbows.   (You can move steering wheel, but not the pedals, so doesn’t work other way round)

If you work for a big company they sometimes have someone trained on seat and chair comfort who will check with you to set things up properly (because they don’t want to have backache etc)

I’m not surprised you find it uncomfortable driving that way. Try setting your seat and steering wheel properly and see if it helps.

Hah, this is a very good point.

Whilst my wallet is far from 'Fat' it does have rather a lot of cards in it.

Pre Covid we used to drive quite a lot of long journeys (especially 5 hour ones in France), I noticed in our Octavia that I was getting a lot of sciatica pain and a tense thigh muscle.

I concluded that there were two issues, firstly my wallet was giving me the sciatica and the front of the seat was too high which was causing the muscle pain.

I Have jacked the seat up (using the seat height adjustment) and made the seat back more vertical, which has almost removed the muscle pain

Now I take my wallet out and stuff it in the Jumbo box, which has solved the sciatica problem.

I have ordered the electric seat for the Karoq, so I am hoping there will be better adjustment of the front edge of the seat height.
