Replacing Columbus with Kenwood Headunit

Featured Replies

Dear all,

The Columbus unit on my 2014 Superb II (L & K Combi) is playing up.  The issue I am having where the unit repeatedly shuts down and reboots has been reprted previously on the forum.  In any case, rather than a repair, I am considering a replacement headunit.  I had considered an Android replacement but issues with the loss of some functionality has caused me to reconssider this.  I am now considering a (kind of) like for like replacement with a Kenwood DNX518VDABS unit.  I am wondering whether others have gone done this route and whether there are any showstoppers/ issues with which I should be aware.  Full functionality/ connectivity of existing features are important.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards,

John

I have gone this way with DNX525DAB and I was not happy with it. Why don't you retrofit Amundsen MIB STD2 PQ unit from yeti FL?

Thanks Pab567 for your response and for your suggestion of retrofitting an Amundsen MIB STD2 PQ.  I had watched your youtube video of this and your previous posts to the forum on this.  The unit does look good but addressing all the issues and recoding, adding gateways etc to ensure that it works fully in the installation process seems complex, and certainly too complex for my limited technical abilities.  While there are some audio specialists who I have spoken with and who could potentialy help, they are not certain of what is required and whether the system will fully work without having the car and the unit.  This, I guess is the issue.  I don't want to buy a unit and then find that I can't get it properly installed!  It was for this reason that  a 'like for like' replacement is more appealing (notwithstanding the cost of these Kenwood units).

You mention that you were not happy with your Kenwood unit.  I have read that the screen resolution is poor and difficult to read in some light conditions but with the exception of installing the digital aerial, everything else seems okay - full functionality, including electric seats, climate system etc seems to provided in the same way as with the Columbus system.  I have also not seen any report of it not working with the MFD dashboard system.  Can you tell me why you were not happy with yur Kenwood system.

Again, any insights greatly appreciated.

Regards,

I have  a spare Kenwood 5190 DAB , which I had I my 2013 Octavia.  Used for less than 1 year. Now have a Superb with Columbus. The Kenwood has Pocket GPs speed cameras installed, but need updating. Also all the extras included to connect with steering wheel and satellites.  Will sell if interested.
