DSG anxiety..

Featured Replies

Hello

My Superb is an 09MY with 2.0 tdi FWD. ALMOST every time I slow down for traffic lights etc I can hear a very subtle clicking sound when the car is shifting from 3rd to 2nd. Sometimes it happens from 4th to 3rd but when it does, there's no click from 3rd to 2nd. The sound is very soft and as far as I can tell the shifts are otherwise normal. I can hear no strange noises on acceleration, park, neutral or reversing.

The car has 280k on the odometer and the DSG oil was changed at 240k.

Should I be worried or just turn the music louder? Thanks.

Never turn up the music too loud.  I once sat in an electronic lecture with the tutor telling us we could all save 5 to 8mpg (29 to 47l/100) and save our ear-drums by keeps the sound levels low.

Anyway - to your DSG gearbox.  I'm assume you have a DQ250 box (6 speed).  My only thoughts are that as it is a dual-clutch system, the clutch selector (for that clutch pack) might be a worn.  Your car should have an oil-change every 60,000 kms, so you are coming up to this point anyway.  What you didn't say was that whilst you had the oil changed at 240k kms, was the filter changed at the same time?

Other things it could be - dual mass flywheel starting to show its age (again, they do wear) - even a noisy clutch pack.

Yes it is a 6 speed. Filter was changed as well.

Might be the clutch selector, yes. The question is if its normal to be clicking. Might be a sign of wear as you said. After all, it has done 280k. Think I'll take it to a shop and have them take a look.

If the fluid was last changed 40000 miles ago, it's due again now. Get that done first, followed by a gearbox reset, and see how you get on.

40000km, not miles :)  Forgot to mention that. But I guess I could get the oil change done anyway just for piece of mind. What does a gearbox reset mean?

It's a diagnostic procedure that makes the controller relearn bite points and engagement points for the different control mechanisms inside the transmission to compensate for wear. More info at http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/6-Speed_Direct_Shift_Gearbox_(DSG/02E)

Saving 47 litres in 100km is not to be sneezed at!

I'll try using the Google calculator again.....I obviously got those figures wrong - never did understand l per 100kms

I understand it and use it as everyone does in this country but after years of MPG it just seems so wrong to be driving economically looking to reduce and not increase the figure!

I did an evening joyride tonight and had the maxidot set to MPG.

I think in general people can relate to a jerrycan of one gallon of fuel (OK its likely to be 5 litres) and visualise that they can drive say 60 miles or 100 kms with it, the other measure is abstract to me.

One is a measure of economy, the other a measure of consumption.

UPDATE

Took the car to an independent garage and agreed that they would first check for loose bolts, engine/box mounts and drive shafts and then do DSG oil change + reset. Well, turned out someone lost the memo. Mechanic stated that no weird noises appeared, dsg functions normally and gave no fault codes. So they did the oil change and reset. Went in and picked up the car and found out that they didnt even check for any loose mounts of drive shafts. Drove home and the clicking sound was still there. Garage said they were sorry (...) and checked everything for free this morning. Mechanic said that there is a little play in the left side drive shaft and ordered the part, although I still dont think he was convinced about the clicking I can very clearly hear my self. Gonna get it changed on monday. Hopefully it fixes the noise.

CV axle changed and no more problems! Car feels much more refined when accelerating, too! Cost me 200€, much better than replacing DMF :)

It's a pointless exercise anyway.  VW has only a tenuous relationship with the truth and their MPG figures have no great level of accuracy, don't expect the l/100km values will be any better.  Mine are generally >10% out.

Mind you to get 5-8MPG by way of the ICE would mean one stupidly powerful system or driving very slowly.

The figures are consistent though, and you can correct the calibration via an adaptation channel if you have VCDS or similar.

I'm sure you are correct but I've never been bothered enough to change it, and I've not got around to getting VCDS yet although I probably should.

I don't have too much interest in improving fuel consumption.  Apparently dinosaur fuels, particularly Diesel, are very nasty things to have around so I'm on a mission to get them used up as quickly as possible, I'm struggling to make much of a dent with the Diesel Superb at around 50MPG but my other 2 cars are both Petrol and at just short of 10 litres combined are doing a good job.
