BLEEDING ABS MODULE

Featured Replies

Has anyone got the blow by blow sequence of actions to flush the ABS module using VAG-COM / VCDS together with a Pressure Bleeder @15 PSI.

I have managed to find the following :-  SELECT MODULE 3 (ABS BRAKES) - BASIC SETTINGS (GROUP 001) - GO.

After this stage I have found there is a lot of conflicting information on the net regarding the sequences to perform (ie when ABS pump is cycling do you open the bleed nipples?).

NB: I have flushed the Master Cylinder (Primary / Secondary) + the Clutch, FRONT NEAR SIDE / FRONT OFFSIDE (together) AND REAR NEARSIDE / REAR OFFSIDE (also together)

However fluid had stopped stopped flowing out of REAR NEAR SIDE after initial air bubbles were flushed out (done using the pressure bleeder).

At no time was the M/Cylinder allowed to go dry. I ran AUTOSCAN and got a ABS OK with no faults, wierd or what.

Thanks

Update:-  After running the ABS via VCDS tonight, bled both front wheels at the same time after it was switched off, front  nearside was clear, however loads of air came out of the offside one.

I discovered the braking layout is front offside to rear nearside (the problem one) and front nearside to rear offside. So will continue pressure bleeding tomorrow.

Make sure you bleed the reservoir too as there are two nipples. On VCDS it tells you in sequence on what you need to do. As you've found out, it will probably need to be done a few times.

Hi Dean,

thanks for the video:thumbup:, I have had a look at it and will jot down the steps. One of the benifits of using a pressure bleeder is having a tank with

2 litres of fluid so no chance of running dry. I did bleed the M/C at the start plus the clutch.  One of the many posts I have read makes a very good point, "That the abs block has many internal features

where air can collect, plus it hardly is ever used". I think in the 15 years I have had my vrs it has only kicked in twice ( gravel / icy road).

NB; A small amount of fluid has now come out of the rear nearside so getting there, the other 3 lines drain ok.

Thanks once again

Is the bleed nipple definately not partially blocked on that caliper?.

I have had reduced flow issues on other vehicles in the past due to small amounts of corrosion.

It's probably not, but worth a quick check anyway.

Hi Phil,

Now that is something i have not considered, oh i wish it was that simple lol.  The 2 rear calipers are new (handbrake mechanism was constantly holding on even with the added  torsion spring).

Then discovered I had reduced braking on that side. I'll check the bleed nipple tomorrow.

Thanks:thumbup:

Well after pumping 5 litres of brake fluid thru' and numerious goes with VAG-COM, gave in and took it to my local garage who have always done my MOT 's.

Spoke to the mechanic afterwards, he told me he disconnected pipes to the ABS and blew it through, that cleared the obstruction, bled everything, MOT'd  it,

good readings on braking efficiency and it passed with no advisories.

Thanks everyone for all your advice
