Reading the intructions and it says to spray the interior surface uniformly with oil.

Interior surface? Is that the bit on the top or bottom?

I've only ever sprayed one side as the oil soaks into the cotton gauze. It then dab both sides with some kitchen paper to remove excess oil

I've done one side and done approx. 4 sprays from a distance and then dabbed all the surplus with kitchen towel.

1 spray didn't seem to cover the entire filter so did 4 squirts, 1 per quarter filter.

Yeah - the intructions say use one spray going down each strip on the filter, so one side should take around 10 or 12 sprays. You just need to be quick as one spray only take half a second to squeeze out and in that time you've got to have gone from one end of the filter to the other.

The key thing I always try to stick to is always under oil rather than over oil.
