Maximum item length that can be carried in estate

Featured Replies

Morning

I have a bit of a weird one since I still have a courtesy car, I can't measure it myself.

Next time I visit France once I have the estate back, I will need to bring back a very old TALL clock....

It is approx 2.3m long ( Cf picture) do you think it could fit in the estate by folding forward the passenger seat?

Thanks

I think it will be VERY tight or not do-able.

Just been out to measure my courtesy car (1.0 e-TEC SE 1st Ed. Estate). Much to my surprise, and unlike all my previous cars) the front passenger seat does fold forward past vertical (see pic). With it pulled as far forward as it will go, and leaned forward as far as it can, the distance to the inner lip of the boot is 2.1m and the diagonal is just 2.3m. There is the recess/storage space on the driver side behind the back wheel which may give enough space for the base of the clock to fit in to. That also means folding forward all of the rear seats - so no passenger at all.

So unless you have a different front passenger seat to the one I have it’s going to be very tight to say the least.

Another thought, laying the passenger seat back and supporting the clock on other luggage may be an option as it could go forward to the dash. Having said that, I couldn’t work out how to remove the passenger seat headrest 🙄

Thanks a lot @snealmuch appreciated.

Really surprised that the front seat cannot be folded forward more. I will be the only passenger so I will have to try to lay the front seat back and hope it fits. Otherwise, I guess it will be roof bars! And hope the 1800s wood stay put...

A further thought @Coume, front passenger seat pushed fully back, backrest fully reclined, near side rear seat back (the narrow one) in ‘normal position’ whilst the other is folded forward.

That ought to allow enough length for the clock and hopefully elbow room for you the driver (unless you’re well over 6’ tall like I am!).

It’s things like this that reminds me of my fathers 1970’s Volvo 145 - three single mattresses inside with plenty of room to spare, and the divan bases on the roof 👍

I would have thought the best way would be to put the front passenger seat all the way forward, remove the headrest and recline the seat all the way back, and fold the rear near side seat down too obviously. Should be enough room. That’s how I’ve carried long things in cars before.
Take blankets and cardboard to brace it and stop it rubbing/banging on upholstery or plastic bits.

In case anyone was curious about this, it fitted surprisingly easily in the seat Ateca (smaller than the octavia estate).

The trick was tilt the passenger seat backward, to remove the front door of the clock and to slot the headrest inside the clock.

It is totally secured and no movement whatsoever but glad it is still my courtesy car as a week of DIY (painting, etc.) was not kind to the car cleanliness.

That is a horological joke right?   🤣

You did a good job of 'Tetris-ing' it in there as neatly as that.
