Main beam turns off after 10 seconds

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I had just bought a 2004 Octavia 2 and I have been experiencing a rather strange issue:

After turning on the main beam (blue light on dash) it turns off after like 10 seconds and the blue indicator on the dash stays on. Same thing happens when I pull the lever towards myself and hold it, it turns off after 10s with the blue indicator stays on until I release the lever. Also the yellow/orange light bulb indicator is on on the dash, which per manual indicates that one of the bulbs don't work anymore, but all of them are still functional even the license plate lights.

Things I have checked:

- Fusebox and relays: fuses shouldn't be an issue, because if they were then the lights would even turn on, there aren't any "main beam only" relays per manual, only left and right side light relays, which when removed causes the whole side to not light up

- Bulbs: took out both of them and hooked them up to a power supply and both of them worked without a problem

- OBD2 scanner: I hooked it up to a OBD scanner but it didn't find any problems

My next guess would be the lever itself at the steering wheel but before I take it apart and/or buy another one I would like some input if someone have already experienced something similar to this.

That sounds like the Canbus is cutting power to the bulbs following it  detecting a 'fault' - as indicated by the yellow warning on the dash.   I'd check the bulbs and wattage are correct and also the connectors as a starting point.  Also have you made any changes to the dipped beams?

I only ask as I had a 50w HID kit fitted in the dipped beam at one time and it would throw a fault code if the main beams were used, even though all lights continued to function.  As soon as the 50w kit was swapped out for a 35w kit the issue went away.

I haven't done any changes to the dipped beams, but since bulbs are pretty cheap I'll probably just grab 2-2 bulbs and replace both the main and dipped beam bulbs and see if that fixes the issue.

The "canbus" neither monitors the bulbs for faults nor cuts the power, both these functions are taken care of by the body control module and the bulbs are hardwired to it.

The BCM like all the vehicle modules communicates with the other control modules via the canbus data wiring.

Whatever ****wit decided to call bulb monitoring canbus has a lot to answer for.

Cheers @J.R. not sure why I typed canbus...   I knew it was the BCM but then had a slight waver as to whether it was some other module...

But you knew what I meant or was getting at :D

Up and update: Changed the dipped bulbs and the problem still persists, there were different bulbs in the left and right sides so I might just ring up the previous owner to see if he had any changes done to it, but I'm still open to suggestions. My last resort would probably be changing the steering wheel lever itself.
