Power wire from engine bay through firewall??

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have a 2011 VRS

Can anyone tell me how to easily get a 4 guage power wire through the firewall for aftermarket amp install.

I have seen there is a grommet on the left in the engine bay that is used for the bonnet release. On the driver's side there appears to be a spare grommet but when I took off the wipers and the plastic covering there was actually not one there going into the cockpit like the other side. I then attempted to look behind the glovebox but could only seem to get the top glovebox out. I am considering drilling a hole next to bonnet release cable but I think it will be tricky to get a drill in there. I'm sure a few people must have run I to the same problem. Does anyone have any advice before I purchase some longer drill bits and get busy.

Thanks

I would have thought there must be the odd access hole somewhere, perhaps where the foot pedals would have been on a "Leftie" As many of these cars would have been ready to take either left or right hand controls from the chassis build, prior to being issued with location, etc. That said, it may have then been plugged up to hide the holes.

I would suggest, however, if drilling, take care to be sure there is nothing behind where you are drilling (How often do you here of people drilling through electrics/pipes whilst trying  a spot of DIY)?  Additionally, be sure to use a nice snug fitting grommet, to cut down on wire movement through the hole and prevent the wire getting snagged/chaffing. A snug grommet will also help with noise/damp penetration, too.

Depending on location, it may also be worth applying a little rust proof paint to the now bare edges of any hole drilled.

Yes I agree there probably are holes there somewhere but as I cannot seem to get the glove box out to look behind it.

I have done quite a few cars in the past and always use grommets etc but it's a real pain in the bum to have to drill but if I do drill it will be right next to the bonnet cable.

Thanks

when I fitted the genuine cruise kit, the loom to the switch / column goes through the main loom plastic housing in the firewall / bulkhead, you have to drill a hole obviously, but far better to drill and grommet in the plastic "imo".

If you look at my attached images you can see below where it tells you to drill, you can access / just see / feel this from under the pedals.

I used a right angle adapter to drill the hole.

Thanks for that. I'll take a look tomorrow.

Ok all done.

I actually did not need to drill. I noticed that little nipple on the side of the main loom grommet. I snipped the nipple to leave a little hole. Put a bit of silicone spray in the hole and fed the cable through there. Then sealed around the edges with silicone sealant. Had to remove the wiper mechanism to get in there properly and to run the amp wire tidily across to the battery.

Thanks for your help. 👍

Fuse at the battery end of this new cable?

Yes, Battery, short run to fuse, then into the car then into a fuse block (which will be hidden passenger side of car) to split into 2 cables for 2 small amps under seats.

Hi there got a 2008 Fabia

Can you help me

I’m hoping drilling was the last option

And seen that it worked for you

Spent hours trying to find a hole to run the wire through but can’t find one that I can access

Where is the hole is it behind the battery under the wipers?

Or behind the engine

and was it easy to pass it through?

Did you put it through the passenger side? Did you have to take th whole glove blox off?

Thanks

I pushed a rigid bit of fencewire through grommet in engine where wires come through and then taped cable to it and pulled it back through as in previous pictures. Think it comes out under glove box area.

Hi are you on Facebook or WhatsApp

Could you tell me where to locate what you shown on the photos

Did you drill from near the firewall outside by the engine

Or do I have to remove the wipers plastic panel to get access ?

And where did you send it through

Passengers side or drivers side?

In Uk the firewall is under the steering wheel

Will I have to remove the glovebox to get access to the wire under the steering wheel?

What if I try to run it through the cabin/bonnet release grommet? Or drill it there ?might be better cos I already have the rca on the right side by the drivers side

Thanks man

Sorry not on facebook etc and just realised its a fabia you have not octavia. Son has mk1 fabia Will check when he comes home. I managed to remove trim under glove box in foot well on octavia and got it to come through there. From memory I removed battery and box to access the large rubber grommet with a pile of cables coming through. The upper grommets go into scuttle tray I assume for wiper motor but lower one feeds into car under dash on passenger side.
